Re: June/July 2010 Minong

June 30, 2010 day 5 Before you head out to Washington Creek from North Desor make sure you are rested. At 6 it was 50 with clear skies. We left at 6:20 and arrived at the Minong Ridge Trail junction in about 12 minutes (for .5-miles). We took our breakfast break at 7:03. By 8:10 we came across a tra...

Re: One Night Trip

Take Tobin Harbor on the way back. You might get to see a moose there too.

Re: 1st Timer to Isle Royale

I've solo hiked your first list of campgrounds and I am sure you won't get lost at all. If you leave Rock Harbor with a couple of liters of water you won't need any until you get to Lane Cove. There are plenty of trees at these campgrounds if you want to hang your food up. Remember to bring a camera...

Re: Lane Cove

Midwest Ed, There are a lot of trees at Lane Cove, but I found it to be a nice restful place. Lots of shooting stars the night I was there (2-3 a.m. however), seen from the shore.

Re: One Night Trip

Tom has excellent comments. If I had only one day, I'd go to Lane Cove. I've spent two nites there. Go for it. If you get on the trail early enough you can do some hiking around Rock Harbor area also when you get back.

Re: June/July 2010 Minong

June 28 (Monday) 3rd day There was some overnight rain between 4 and 5. I also heard wind and the waves coming in all night long. I’m normally a light sleeper, so I got about 5 to 6 hours of sleep. When I got up at 5:30 it was 54. We were able to get on the trail by 6:42. It took 35 minutes to cover...

Re: Animals Anyone?????

We got lucky at Washington Creek on June 30, mama moose and her twins walked by shelter 13 at about 9:15 p.m. He ears did that twitching thing, so we stayed behind the picnic table.

Re: June/July 2010 Minong

June 27, 2010 (Sunday) day 2 After about 5 hours of sleep I got up early. It was cloudy and 56 degrees. We hit the trail early (6:42 a.m.). The Minong Ridge Trail is not easy, but is doable for a lot of folks from McCargoe to Todd Harbor. Granted there are a number of ridges one has to climb. After ...

No, just after you go by the showers, there is a trail immediately to your left. It's right on the Rock Harbor shore.

Re: June/July 2010 Minong

A word of warning from an old guy, I suggest you don't do the Minong by yourself. And again I want to thank all those who gave me advice this past winter. I used almost all of their ideas/suggestions. Isle Royale NP June/July 2010 trip June 24-25 I didn’t go solo this year. A veteran hiker came alon...

Re: Safe for group to split up???

As Tom and Tampico have indicated you shouldn't have anything to worry about. Usually, I go by myself (and I'm way older then you) and never have been concerned for my safety.

Re: August/Sept. 2009 late report

3 nights in the same place did make me want to get out of there (the island too). Thank goodness the weather changed for the good. I was actually very lucky to have a shelter. I came across some folks who were out way beyond the shelters. Their equipment was still wet on the way back to Michigan.

August/Sept. 2009 late report

Isle Royale NP 2009 (4th solo hike) August 25-26 Drove up from Ohio leaving at sun down. Got to “The Bridge” to the U.P. just before sun up. Got gas and ended west on US2. Took Mi.117 north to Mi.28. When I was on Mi.117 for about five minutes I had to hit the brakes hard to avoid hitting a wolf. We...
