Re: Solo Inland Lake Kayaking or Canoeing

Hey Ron, Canoe vs Kayak: I've always canoed, so am biased. In either case you need to be confident in your ability to self-rescue, since you'll be alone. Water temps are going to be very cold and hypothermia is a real risk if you go in. I've always portaged a canoe solo, so that isn't a big deal to ...

Re: Backcountry with children

Nicole, I like Bob's idea of renting a boat. Or if you do rent canoes, I'd also recommend staying in Rock Harbor (the body of water) and avoid portaging. But I can't recommend canoeing unless you're pretty experienced, especially with young children. Here's the link for boat (and canoe) rentals. Not...

Re: Basic Fishing Supplies

For Northern Pike, spoons (Daredevil), Rapalas, and/or Mepps spinners. Be sure you use a wire leader. I'm not much of a fisherman either, but I can catch some pike with those. We did well in the narrows joining Lakes Siskiwit and Wood, and also trolling along the shore of Siskiwit. Northerns are pro...

Re: First time IR canoe trip questions... help a n00b out!!

1.How long should we expect these portages to take The Tobin Harbor/Duncan Bay portage took me and my daughter 2 hrs, with a rest at the top of the ridge. An earlier trip with the family of 4 (daughters were 13 & 15) took about 3 hrs. For the other 2 portages, just add 5-10 mins to the time it ...

Re: Greenstone Ridge in 3 Days (crazy?)

When I worked in R.H. in '79, two girls "dayhiked" R.H. to Windigo. They did bring flashlights, and used them, back before headlamps were popular.

Would you care to explain the "BOINGA" moniker? B oys O f ING ersoll A dventure -- Basically an excuse for 5 dispersed brothers and Dad to get together for a trip (we were missing 1 on that trip). Have done I.R., sailed NC, Apostle Islands and North Channel, and then a more sedentary one ...

Re: Paddling or portaging south from McCargoe Cove?

Hey Eddie, It IS a short paddle up the creek from the McCargoe dock to the portage. There's been 1 beaver dam to haul the boats over. I'd have to try and measure on a map to be sure, but I think it would add less than 1/4 mile to just start portaging at the dock. Depending on when you're going, it's...

Re: A question about Siskiwit Bay & McCargo

I think that some time in the past there were some partying issues at those campgrounds. Haven't heard of any problems in recent years. It's directed at everyone, although it is obviously easier to float large quantities of alcohol than to carry it. Can't imagine anyone cares what you drink if it is...

Surprised no one mentioned "How to Sh** in the Woods" by Kathleen Meyer. Yeah, there really is a book telling you how to do that. http://www.amazon.com/How-Shit-Woods-Kathleen-Meyer/dp/0898153190 LOVE IT! So funny and even educational. It's been a few years, so I think you just in...

Re: Any good shore-fishing locations?

I think the Greenstone (annual park newspaper) lists what fish are supposedly in what lakes. There's an .xls spreadsheet you can download from NPS site, http://www.nps.gov/isro/planyourvisit/brochures.htm Just click "Fish List in Inland Lakes". Don't remember if the same info is the Green...
