Re: Water filter system query
Prior to my last trip I had read about wrapping a coffee filter around the intake hose to help keep sediment out. While I didn't have any issues with the water filter clogging, the coffee filter was fairly brittle, and I kept having to reapply it. I'm thinking of using a piece of thin material next ...

Re: QUESTIONS!!!!!! first venture to IR!
From a food perspective, I used http://www.packitgourmet.com/ my last trip. They were all various degrees of delicious and very easy to prepare. I had the gumbo, chicken and dumplings, and tortilla soup. I supplemented with the ready to eat chicken in the foil pouch from the grocery store.

Re: Looking for itinerary suggestions: Windigo to Rock Harbo
I did the Feldtman loop and then the Greenstone to Hatchet on my 2011 trip. Trip report here: http://www.isleroyaleforums.com/viewtop ... f=8&t=1528
I think it is well worth the extra days needed to pull it off.

Re: 1st Isle Royale Trip in the planning phases
I've never taken the Ranger III so can't vouch for any advantages. For me, I would rather spend the extra time in the car to Copper Harbor, less time on the boat to the island, and more time on the island with the better ferry schedule. Using the Queen allows you to get an earlier start on your arri...

Re: Inland Lakes
I hiked Windigo to RH last year. I stayed at Feldtman, and like it the best. While I didn't stay at Desor or Hatchet, I did do a quick drive by enroute to Todd Harbor. Given those three at least, I'd choose Feldtman.

Re: Options: Windigo to Rock Harbor
I did this route last summer, although I stayed at Island Mine, Todd Harbor and Daisy Farm. There is a trip report posted. The stretch of the Minong between Hatchet and McCargo is pretty straight forward with the exception of open ledge just outside McCargo.

Your report and photos were great. For me, the most memorable picture was actually the one with your two kayaks on top of a Mini-Cooper. That must really turn some heads. That little car accomodated two adults, two kayaks and all your gear! I would have enjoyed just sitting and watching you unload....

Re: help with last minute tweaks to thru-hike itinerary
Given how late it stays light out this time of year, you could easily make Daisy Farm on day 1. That would open up all kinds of new routes.

Re: Greenstone Ridge Trail fastest known time (FKT) attempt
Day 3 - Thurs July 12
* Depart Rock Harbor at 8:00am central via Voyageur 2
* Arrive Windigo at 12:30pm central to pick up gear stored
* Fly from Windigo back to Houghton via seaplane (for me and my crew) at 3pm
He is due back on land this afternoon. I'm chomping at the bit to hear how it went, too.

Re: West End IR trip
If it were me, I'd opt for an extra day at Siskiwit Bay over going to South Desor.
I was at both last year. I tend to lean toward the outer shoreline sites over the inland lake sites.
But, in the end, you're on the island and that is what matters at the end of the day!

I don't know anything about fishing. But, a google search brought up the following that seems to meet your criteria:

You indicated your appetite wasn't what you expected it to be. I wonder if the fact your body didn't have enough fuel to burn led to you being cold on the chillier nights.

Re: Do you use trekking poles on IR?
I used poles (2) for the first time on my visit last year when I hiked from Windigo to Rock Harbor. I found them very useful and won't hesitate to use them again.
