Re: Wi-Fi at Rock Harbor

Respect to those who wish to "stay connected," but occasionally I have a need to be a lesser member of the Hominini tribe ( H. habilis , or H. ergaster perhaps?). Too few places remain in the lower 48 where one can completely disconnect from electronic communications, including the demonic...

Re: Hammock friendly campsites

JackieK- We've done the FLoop (my wife's name for it) a number of times and my initial feeling is that there are locations for hanging a hammock/hammock tent at many of the campsites along that route. Siskiwit may be a little skimpy but I believe there is at least one campsite with trees close. The ...

Re: Solo Kayaking inland lakes.

It's a personal preference, but I'm not a fan of portaging inflatables. Even portaging something like a packraft numerous times may really stress the material it is made of. Note that there is little trail maintenance in the backcountry late in the season: if trees blow down they will stay there unt...

Re: first sea kayak trip advice

Having transitioned from backpacks to kayaks several years ago, we have found that flexibility is important. We used to schedule our hiking trips for September: fewer people and bugs. While the lake is always unpredictable, by September you can expect conditions for kayaking to definitely require mo...

Re: September Boat Delays

All the Rangers go home the week of Labor Day. Better take enough extra for another day. Just curious: what is your source for this? I'm wondering why any of the staff would leave during the busy holiday weekend... Any unopened food packets I have at the end of my trip I leave at the Windigo Visito...

Re: Forecast accuracy

I concur about the extremes of September weather... After being caught in a severe thunderstorm at Feldtmann Lake in mid-September of 2004 (wind gusts at Rock of Ages peaked at 69 mph) I started packing a NOAA radio. I switched to a marine radio with NOAA when we started taking kayaks a few years ag...

Re: Fleece a major source of plastic pollution

I was surprised that the article did not note that much of the fleece made by Patagonia, as well as many other quality manufactures such as North Face, is composed of recycled plastics. As such, we are at least statically retaining some of the world’s existing plastic materials from the environment ...

Re: Why you should use liquid fuel

While I have used the SVEA 123 since the 70's without any issues, since transitioning to sea kayaks we now carry a back-up Sierra Zip Stove (http://www.zzstove.com/) and reduce the amount of fuel we take. If nothing else it provides a little ambiance while watching the sunset at Long Point or Rainbo...
