Re: Agate Beach

I hope you find the time! For some reason I can't put my finger on, I expect your TR would have an excellent morel.
Torpified,

Is that what they refer to as a pun?! :)

Re: 2021 Trip Advice: Minong Ridge, to Daisy Farm

Moskey -Daisy Farm is an unexpectedly rough 3.5 miles or so, up and down off rock outcroppings, little shade, etc. This will be at the end of your day. As long as you know that, and manage your energy accordingly. I've met many hikers who are exhausted and stumbling into either Moskey or Daisy, aft...

Re: Isle Royale Closed for 2020?

Looks like Isle Royale is closed until further notice. No ferry service, no lodging at Rock Harbor in 2020. Not sure about Windigo. Or if you take your own boat. Here's the details: https://www.nps.gov/isro/planyourvisit/ ... bXxdkzxBfA Without ferry service, I guess my planned canoe trip to Isle R...

Re: Isle Royale Loons

I love listening to the sounds of the loons from my sleeping bag there on the island.

Re: New Windigo Store

I really like the old store, and sitting on the deck with a pizza and beverage, so I am fine with having just one more year to enjoy the view from the deck. Just dreaming about my trip at the end of June (instead of mid-May)... Me too! One of the things I like most about visiting Isle Royale is sit...

Re: Summer Wanderlust

If you liked Acadia, and want to see even more Canadian moose *in Canada*, next time you're in the neighborhood, keep going north and east, toward Cape Breton Island (reachable by causeway), Nova Scotia. It's the only place I've ever been that made IR seem moose-poor. Thanks for the tip torpified! ...

Re: Summer Wanderlust

At the risk of giving away a well-kept secret, one the best places I visited was Baxter State Park. I stayed in a lean-to for two nights and absolutely enjoyed it! I hope to return again and spend more time there! I think the type of people on this forum who like going to Isle Royale would enjoy Bax...

Re: Summer Wanderlust

Did you get to Cape Cod?
To be honest I wasn't even sure where it was until I looked at my road atlas last night. It looks like an interesting place to visit! Similar to driving your car to the end of the Florida Keys!

Summer Wanderlust

Last summer (2019) I took a road trip out east. I am from North Dakota but I teach and live in Montana. I usually sleep in my vehicle (a station wagon) while on the road. My summary, that I include with a calendar I put together with pictures, follows. I apologize for its length but I tried to break...

Re: Portage from Lake Whittlesey to Wood Lake

The Whittlesey portage is fast and easy. I stay at Wood Lake and can portage and canoe it in about 20 minutes, in the dark. My solo canoe is 26 pounds. I like to walleye fish the last couple of hours of daylight there. And the boardwalks are low and dry. I plan to be in that area the whole month of...

Re: What Food Is Best?

I'm ashamed to say that I build my backpacking menus around instant coffee, poptarts, and ramen.
Torpified, don't be ashamed! It seems to work well for you as you certainly cruise across the island at a quick pace!

Re: What Food Is Best?

I use Mountain House for my evening meals. On the lighter side, I like Mary Janes Farm (dehydrated) for lunch. I found out about Mary Janes Farm when I was subscribed to Backpacker Magazine. It is pretty tasty food! During the day I snack on Cliff Bars and bagels.
