Re: Denatured alcohol availability on Isle Royale
If they don't allow fuel alcohol one can always pack a fifth of Everclear but you might not be able to buy it in Michigan.

Re: What are you spending your REI dividend on? 2017 Edition
I forgot I had a dividend until I stopped at the REI store in Knoxville and bought some long underpants. With the 20% off and dividend I walked out of the store with a $59 (outrageously overpriced) underwear for a reasonable $32.

Re: LeConte Lodge
LeConte Lodge for many years has had a system like season ticket holders for sports teams, they have a group of guests who have reserved the same dates for over 20 years. There are called "grandfathered" reservations because in 1998 the Park Service said they had to end the program in 20 y...

Re: Powdered Peanut Butter
When figuring your backpacking diet, peanut butter is normally considered an oil. PB2 is peanut butter with the oil removed. Not sure how that would be figured. As a mix of protein and starch by dry weight?

Mailing is one option. Another, more expensive, way is to UPS the box to Voyageur and pay them to drop it off at a specific landing on a specific day.

Re: Power Bank for Phones, GPS, Camera, etc
As mentioned, since recharging a battery is a lossy process, it's better to use devices with removable batteries and carry spares than to carry a recharger.

Re: cell phone coverage?
I'm curious if and how AT&T's sunsetting of 2G service will affect Isle Royale? Will they make an exception for their long-range GSM service in UP? Is their 3G/4G service up to the job?

It costs more but you can also UPS a box to Voyager II and have them deliver it on a specific day.

Re: Dumb question
"Trail" and "Backcountry Permit" are mutually exclusive concepts. If you are on a trail, you must camp in designated campsites. If you are using a Backcountry Permit to camp in outside of campsites you must be off the trail. They are also extremely restrictive about your schedule...

Re: LeConte Lodge
You wouldn't recognize the area outside the park today. Pigeon Forge is a mess. One continuous strip mall with one cheesy tourist trap after another. It beggars description. Probably all because of Dollywood. Gatlinburg is more controlled, better regulated but still overgrown. When we left for the l...

LeConte Lodge
Monday of last week, my brother and I hiked up to the LeConte Lodge in Smoky Mountains NP, outside of Gatlinburg, TN and stayed a couple of nights. One summer in the early '60s our family had rented horses and ridden up there during a vacation but didn't stay overnight. It was quite treat to be able...

Re: What are you spending your REI dividend on? 2016 Edition
I have not decided what to do with the whole $6. I ended up buying a pair of boots from the website. Even though they were shipped from Georgia, I had to pay $15 to mail them to the REI return center in WA. So, I decided to wait until I was at an REI store to try boots. The $6 dividend was applied ...

Re: Coffee On The Isle
A friend of mine just came back from Korea and gave me some Korean coffee instant packs. It's a bit sweeter than I like (I'm already sweet enough), but it's damn tasty:..... I was given a bunch of Vietnamese "G7" brand instant coffee packs. They come pre-whitened not bad but pretty eye-op...
