Re: Fortunate Wilderness: The Documentary
Hi all, Went and saw the film last night. Pretty good. John V gave a little talk before and then he and George Desort (filmmaker) did a Q&A afterwards. http://www.fortunatewilderness.com/ for info on future screenings and, eventually according to George, DVD copies for sale. Also a trailer to wa...

Re: Wolves vs Moose Showdown
Here's my take based on very little knowledge: We just do not act like prey. When a wolf appears we go towards it, talk to it, point at it, call others over. We interact cooperatively, which I suspect the wolves can detect, since they do the same thing. Wolves also learn from their elders and humans...

The tandem was relatives of some friends. They were doing a loop from Duluth: Duluth - Grand Portage - Copper Harbor MI via Voyager/Queen - Duluth.

Re: food help on first trip
Hi Steve, I find that the Mountain House 2-serving are really more like 1 1/2 servings of entree only. A bit like going to a restaurant and getting lasagna with no salad, garlic bread, etc. The lodge restaurant has dinner for around $30/per person, mainly because of the NPS surcharge for utilities, ...

Re: Six Nights in August
I would opt for the second night at Lane Cove and then hike directly to RH to catch the Queen at 2:45. Lane Cove is beautiful and you might want a down day after the hike from McCargoe.

Re: A few miscellaneous questions.....
If it's a paperback, just stick it in a plastic bag and hide it under a log (or a shelter). Chances are it will be there when you return.

Re: A few miscellaneous questions.....
Another consideration - at RH the washer is $6 and the dryer is 25c/cycle (not sure how many minutes) so might be cheaper to wash your clothes than to store clean ones.

Hi!
Just got back from the Island. The RH store takes credit cards for any purchases over $5.

caribou date is wrong
Hi all,
I emailed Mark Romanski, Lead Biological Science Technician at the park and he replied:
Not correct, good catch, should be around 1928. I think what happened is they put the Lynx date in the wrong place, that should be 1981.
I will forward this to the proper authorities.

We have the cheapest Nokia phone Alltel offers on their prepaid plan and have always had success calling from the high points of the Greenstone and from the ridge behind Chippewa Harbor campground. We now always carry it for emergencies and to check in with our house-and-cat-watchers every few days....
