Seems things are mostly on Facebook nowadays. I don't engage much there, each thread gets dozens of nearly identical replies from people who don't bother to read what else has been posted.
I'll be on the island around that time, taking it slow on the Feldtman loop!

Re: What are you spending your 2023 REI dividend on?
Garmin: I've acquired my Garmin in an era where you were allowed to specify your own trio of free "preset" messages. One of mine is "at camp, intact". Another provokes a (typically wildly misleading) local weather report from NOAA. Are the trio of free "presets" no lon...

Re: What are you spending your 2023 REI dividend on?
I'm (finally) buying a Garmin inReach to give my relatives peace of mind. I'm especially a fan of the free check-in messages. Sadly the 20% coupon doesn't work on devices with GPS chips, but the dividend at least takes a bit of the edge off.

Re: CalTopo Base Map of Isle Royale Features
I mainly know it because I helped make a similar map for the Porcupine Mountains . Not nearly as polished or complete as yours. The Porkies are notorious for extremely inaccurate trail mileage markers, so it was really needed. Wow! I like your Porkies map. I'm going to bookmark that one for the nex...

Re: CalTopo Base Map of Isle Royale Features
Wow, this is fantastic! I'll be using this with my upcoming trip for sure.
One nice feature of CalTopo (or maybe its underlying data suppliers?) is that trail mileages tend to be more accurate than other maps, because they're based on some kind of average of real GPS tracks.

Re: Crazy Idea to Circumnavigate the Island?
This sounds like a lot of fun. I agree with Ingo, if the expense is doable, then I can't imagine you'd end up thinking "why did I bother doing that?"

There's also an old outhouse a bit into the woods at the Ojibway tower, just down the hill in the Rock Harbor direction.

Cultural Resource Management Plan
I do not pretend to fully understand this, but it looks like the park has adopted "Alternative B" as their Cultural Resource Management Plan: https://www.nps.gov/isro/learn/news/national-park-service-releases-final-cultural-resources-plan-for-isle-royale.htm From the press release, it soun...

Re: West end spring trip
That's the thing! It's a "horizontal stationary steam engine", very similar to the type that would be used in a train engine, but also commonly used to power machinery at mines. You can find nearly identical ones scattered around the woods in the Copper Country... they were too heavy to bo...

Re: West end spring trip
The old boiler is high on my list of things to find, along with any other remnants of the Island Mine (like the well, and the powder house on Senter Point). Mine ruins are definitely one of the highlights of hiking on the island for me!

Re: West end spring trip
Thanks, Ingo. I really like the idea to do the Feldtman loop clockwise, that sounds better in many ways. Thanks also for the shelter and site recommendations. I think Huginnin will stay at the end of the trip, since it would give us more flexibility.

West end spring trip
Hi all, since it's winter and we could all use some cheerful thoughts about backpacking trips, I thought I'd post about my upcoming trip here and see what advice you can offer. My wife and I are planning a week-long west end trip, starting May 23rd. Plane reservations are already made. This will be ...

Re: TR: 5/25-5/29, 2022 [Hiking] [Windigo to Malone Bay via Feldtmann Loop]
Thanks for this wonderful trip report. I'll be heading to the west end this year at this same time -- end of May. Your log makes me both excited and nervous, especially the potential for cold, wet days.
