Re: "Sequester" impact for Isle Royale

In the past (the 80's) there were quite a few incidents involving boaters pulling up to a dock, setting up their boombox, chairs ect and partying into the wee hours. The Park Service did a good job at curtailing these activities. I observed some of the partying at Moskey Basin where a bonfire was l...

Re: "Sequester" impact for Isle Royale

I'm really trying hard not to reply negatively to the assumption that because rangers will not be present at the Malone or Amygdaloid docks, there will be problems with boaters. What about the other docks that have no permanent ranger presence? I'm not aware of any incidents (requiring ranger interv...

Re: "Sequester" impact for Isle Royale

This is probably going to effect more boaters than hikers. No one hikes to Amygdaloid... Amygdaloid isn't really seen as a "public" dock amongst boaters, anyway. Even if they shut down the station, I really don't see the point in shutting down the dock. I can tie up to any number of other...

Which is a perfect use for it. I don't understand how taking this tower down is going to make the park any more wild when there are three small towns on the island.

Re: Water taxi ride share anyone? May 31st RH to Moskey or C

I'm curious. I always thought the water taxi was operated using a per-person (and canoe/kayak) fare.

I don't know what you'd be "sharing" here, besides the ride. Were you trying to save money?

All the more reason to carry a handheld marine VHF radio.

If there are boaters nearby, they can be just a helpful as the Rangers.

Re: Hat & Camera Question

I have one of these; a bit expensive, but unless you lose it, you'll never buy another hat.

If you do lose it, they'll give you 50% off on a new one.

One of the cottages out there is the residence for the Isle Royale Artist in Residence. The others are either empty or life-lease holders.

Re: Canoe motors and transportation

If you want to leave your motor at Moskey, bring a bicycle lock and lock it to a tree. No hiker is going to steal an outboard motor and I can't imagine any boater doing so, either. With a bike lock, you don't have to worry about it.

Re: Portable Weather Radio Signal

If you really want to listen to the NOAA broadcasts, find your way to a campsite with a dock. If there are boats there, they'll have a better radio and a better antenna.

Re: Where is the best panoramic view?

There is actually cell-phone coverage on many parts of the island. I had coverage while anchored at the Duncan Bay Lakeside Camp back in 2005. That was quite surprising.

Re: Where is the best panoramic view?

Lookout Louise is nice; and it's easy to get to. It looks hard to get to. Either use a water taxi or two nights (and no loop) just to see it. What I should have said is that it's easy for me to get to because I have my own boat. What I really meant is the hike from the dock isn't all that bad, and ...

Re: Sunrise to Sunset on Isle Royale National Park

That is a compilation of video i have shot over the last few visits. Glad you enjoyed it! Hey, no kidding! I was kind-of hoping it was put together by someone here. Thanks very much for all your ISRO videos; I watch them about once a week. One question: in one scene, you are doing some tripod work ...
