Ask your MD for a Rx for Meclizine.

Re: GPS for Microsoft Phone

Be sure that whatever app you pick does NOT require a cell signal to work.
Also, when using, turn off WiFi, BlueTooth and put the phone in "Airplane Mode" so that it becomes just a handheld computer.

Re: Pack weight

"Dry" (sans water & food) about 14-15 lbs depending on season. I try to keep the total "wet" weight below 30 lbs. Then I carry this "spare tire" around the middle just for fun. :)

I didn't say it was "good", just that it was the closest thing they had. They really should sell it by the oz like they sell white gas.

Winter camping in Alabama

We just finished a two-night outing in the Talladega National Forrest in NE Ala. Weather was very good. Coldest night on top of the mountain was about 36ºF and the warmest was probably near 70ºF on south-facing slopes at midday. No rain but it rained last week so there were no issues finding water, ...

Re: NPS will not meet Senator Peters Wolf rescue timeline

Well, there's little about Isle Royale that is "untrammeled". Man has made significant modifications to the island's environment over the centuries: logging, farming attempts, tourism. It's been a petri dish that biologists have been observing for at least 50 years. It seems that if a heal...

Re: NPS will not meet Senator Peters Wolf rescue timeline

Caribou Island (smaller than IR) had caribou (surprise!) on it when Alexander Henry visited it in the mid 1700's. No wolves though - as he reported finding caribou strewn about dying from old age, not predation. My suggestion has been to introduce caribou to I.R. Presumably they would occupy a diff...

You might want to try this in the garage first. The amount of pressure required to secure against a lateral pull on a C-clamp of that magnitude will probably be enough to damage the wood.

Re: Hammocks Inside of Shelters

I thought about this a lot and have looked for a way to attach a temporary grip to a 2x4 that would not do any harm. Clearly you don't want to go around drilling holes or screwing in eye bolts. Something that would work sort of like a cable grip but designed for 2x4s.

Re: NPS will not meet Senator Peters Wolf rescue timeline

Let me get this straight. The NPS didn't put the moose or the wolves on I.R. but has done just about everything possible to protect them. Maybe they're just not meant to survive. Too little genetic diversity.

Re: Cooking in shelters

On very cold days, before the fuel canister pumps, I used to light my old Svea 123 by dosing it liberally with gas, standing back and throwing a match. After the 2 foot flame died down, reach in to open the valve just before the flame went out. Then I would carry it inside the shelter to cook. I've...

Re: Prepping for Isle Royale: A comprehensive guide

If your trip includes Windigo you might want to take a cork stopper sized to fit the sink in the laundry. Somewhere around here I have my I.R. notebook with the diameter of the drain.
