Ingo, thanks for the report! Lake Superior can be so fickle. Sounds like you did a great job adjusting to the conditions.
We always bring a backup gravity filter when paddling or hiking. Very small and lightweight.

Re: Old Trails
Back from the island with a follow up on looking for this trail... We searched for the Lake Halloran trail with no luck. I marked the 2 GPS points I had that were based on the only two maps I had. Neither one of these were topo maps so, they were only approximations. However, based on the terrain in...

Re: Old Trails
I know this is an old post and I have not posted anything further on the subject, but I hope to. Been busy with some other things related to the island and website and hope to share more trail history. I am planning on searching for this trail this fall. Wish me luck. I will let you know what I find...

1000 registered users
Approaching 1000 registered users! (998 right now) A milestone. I personally want to thank Fonix and this whole community! If not for Richard, this might have disappeared. If not for you all, this would be nothing. In everything I do and respond to I point people here and I am always thanked for sen...

Re: Getting Stuck on the Island
In my experience on the island with the Voyageur and the Queen, they have always, ALWAYS, been concerned with their passengers and have done their VERY best to take care of everyone. The Park Service also does everything they can do, from letting you make phone calls to providing food (be it limited...

Re: Proposed user fee increase
I have always feared the reservation system, one of the best parts of isle royale is the first come first serve availability system. It creates a sense of community in a way and allows people to double up and share space if needed, a somewhat unique part of the isle royale experience. Reservations ...

Re: Copper Harbor to IR NP
After labor day the boat does not usually fill up . However, if you are going for sure, make the reservation to guarantee your spot.

Re: Proposed user fee increase
Ok. As I said, I would pay the fee increase, no problem. But, after thinking about it and reading Captain Don's post, I thought about it a bit more. Where would the fee increase go???? Would it go to Isle Royale directly or into a general Park Service fund???? Like the lottery "ear marked"...

Re: Bushwack Question
The only thing I would add to this as it is pretty much covered in all of the replies above is, this time of year is not a good time to bushwack. It is thick and bug infested! The best time to bushwack is the springtime. It is not as thick. However, it is VERY wet. In my recent (mostly unsuccessful)...

Re: Solo canoe trip, 3rd week September 2016
We are going to just miss both of you. We are arriving in Rock Harbor via the Voyageur on the 28th. Bummer Ingo, it would have been nice to see our matching canoes side by side. Oh yes, and to see you :D I agree with everything Ingo said, he is the man. In my experience, you can paddle the Rock Harb...

Re: Yet Another Itinerary Question - kayaking to Merrrit Lane
As Ingo said, it is all based on conditions. The stretch from Scoville to Merritt is open water. It is also deep water with varying water currents going different directions. Meaning the wind can be coming from one direction and the water currents going another direction and changing while going acr...

Re: Proposed user fee increase
I have bought a season pass every year for the past ? (I'm too lazy to think about) years. It is the minor cost of trips compared to the ferries, gear, time off work, hotels, etc. $4 per day seems very low to me for the park. I would actually round it off to $10 per day to make it easier and give th...

Re: Itinerary/Campsite advice (Little Todd vs Malone Bay)
Welcome to the forums! I'd say those are some ambitious miles, but you can always change from your planned route. I have rarely stuck exactly to my planned itinerary. As far as Little Todd versus Malone Bay, I would go for Little Todd for sure. But, that depends on what you are looking for. Malone h...
