Re: Water filter recommendation?
Revisiting the issue of the lost input hose for the Katadyn Hiker Pro: Since it is the "input" hose that is at risk, there is really no need to utilize the quick disconnect, so I'll just connect this hose directly to the pump. The "output" hose needs to be kept cleaner, stored in...

You should now have my $5 contribution. Tremendous ROI, considering all of the answers and advice you all shared with us prior to our first IR visit in July 2011. Don't know if or when we'll return to IR, but I still check the forum every day or two--I'm addicted!!!

Jul 25-31,2011 Paddle/Portage McCargoe to Chippewa via Siski
(apologies for length; hope some of you find this entertaining &/or helpful) Tom, Joe, and Gregg paddle & portage across Isle Royale. From Idea to Adventure. John Pearson and John Craun had just completed their presentations at the January 2011 Indian Creek Nature Center Paddle Day, sharing ...

Re: Hiking Isle Royale:things I wish I'd realized or listene
We were at Chippewa Harbor late afternoon on July 30, when a ranger docked. Not sure whether he received the radio call before or after docking, but he was looking for a gal with a dislocated shoulder. We never saw anyone come down the trail, and he eventually disappeared. Does anyone have any info ...

Re: Long report for short trip
Good to hear that your trip went well, Ingo. Sorry we couldn't connect at Windigo Sunday morning. I think that we delayed the Voyageur II slightly as it was, listening for a boat horn "toot" that never occurred. Our 3 man "Daisy Chain Gang" also enjoyed a successful paddle and po...

Re: Portage conditions McCargoe to Chippewa, approp footgear
Well, we are back from the 8 lakes and 8 portages of the McCargoe to Chippewa adventure, and the jury is still somewhat "out" regarding the best choice of footgear. Our group of 3 utilized Keen sandals (with and without socks), Chota Mukluks, medium weight hiking boots (Keens and another b...

Re: Water filter recommendation?
Just returned from 6 days kayaking inland lakes on IR, outfitted with a Katadyn Hiker Pro. On the second evening, while drawing water from offshore in Lake Ritchie, I inadvertantly released the input hose, complete with float, screen, weight, etc. Lesson learned is that the "quick-connect"...

Re: Registering at Windigo, specific info required?
I wish you were correct, but that McCargoe to Chickenbone portage was extended to 1.2 miles for the 2010 season, and the portage chart in the 2011 Greenstone still says the same.
We'll look forward to meeting you at GP.

Portage conditions McCargoe to Chippewa, approp footgear
We'll be heading from McCargoe Cove to Chippewa Harbor, via Siskiwit, next week. Haven't been able to find much info on the portages (beyond the Greenstone chart of distance, elevation, comment) which might help us determine whether we should wear hiking boots or mukluks. Can anyone direct me to an ...

Re: Registering at Windigo, specific info required?
With 3 guys sharing the same itinerary, will that speed things up? Do we do one registration for the three, or three separate? We have a typed planned itinerary, just to assist our memories, so that will help. We'll be looking for you at GP, RiverWatkins. We're overnighting at the GP Lodge & Cas...

Re: Seek feedback re P/P options south from McCargoe Cove.
Many thanks to you, John, and all the other folks who answered our "newbie" questions. We've been practicing loading kayaks and portage packs, checking weights, fretting over which items are needed or just nice, and generally getting anxious to get on the island. We'll load the kayaks and ...

Registering at Windigo, specific info required?
We'll be aboard the Voyageur II from Grand Portage on Monday, stopping at Windigo to register, on our way to drop at McCargoe Cove. Since this is our first time on IR, and noting the short window of time at Windigo, we want to be prepared to not delay anyone or "miss the boat." Should we b...

License to fish in Superior around IR; must it be Michigan?
To fish in Lake Superior around IR, must you have a Michigan fishing license? Or could it be Minnesota? Or Wisconsin?
Someone from Illinois or Iowa would have a better chance of using a MN or WI license for more than just an IR visit.
