Re: GPX Files
Check out Mike T's website (a forum member here). I think he has GPX formatted info. http://www.isleroyale.info/ I also found these with a Google search, not sure how useful they might be: http://www.trimbleoutdoors.com/ViewTrip/1084161 http://www.everytrail.com/view_trip.php?trip_id=176989 Keep an ...

Re: Where is the best panoramic view?
The best views IMO are along the Greenstone Ridge from Mount Franklin to Mount Ojibway. The ridge is bare enough in places that unobstructed views to the north and south are plentiful. This is not my picture from Mount Franklin so I thank Steve of Steve's National Park blog. It's taken with a fairly...

Re: Seeking Advice, first IR trip with family.
Do remember that you can't stay 2 consecutive nights at the R.H. campground, so you can't get there 2 days before the boat, unless you get a room. If a canoeist/kayaker found themselves somewhat "stuck" at Rock Harbor or they wanted to to stay close, one additional and fairly simple possi...

I second Ingo's comments. Some additional comments: With only 5 days your eventual schedule depends on your desire, adventurousness and weather. If things work out well and weather is good then on the first day you might might make it all the way to Moskey Basin. Maybe not. Strong headwinds can make...

You are going to hit all my favorites (Rainbow Cove, Siskiwit Bay, Todd Harbor sunset, McCargoe Cove, Moskey Basin and most importantly Greenstone Ridge vistas.) I made almost the same route in 1975 with a starting wet weight of 55 pounds but had some shorter days with more stops over 13 nights. I'd...

Re: Sawyer Squeeze @REI for $31
Even though there have been several threads on water treatment, I think it is very good to bring it up again from time to time. A slight amount of misinformation or differences of opinion regarding trail food, gear or even scenic views won’t harm anyone but getting water treatment correct is unique....

So let me get this straight. You ran out of fuel but still had plenty of Scotch Whiskey? Hmmmm

I suggest writing your message on toilet paper you bring and then hanging it in the outhouse. It's sure to eventually get disposed and you just might get the word out to someone in the mean time.Wilderness Junkie wrote: . . . . . Any better suggestions?

There were easily 150 people, probably closer to 200. The theater was packed. Great food also. You were correct about it not being a documentary. It was more personalized than I expected. It kind of reminded me of a modern day filmography version of Thoreau's "Waldon (Pond)". I'm still con...

What ever happened to "Fizzies"? As a kid we would put these tablets in tap water and out came grape soda. How about a malt and hops flavored Fizzy tablet with a 1/2 shot of grain alcohol in some cold Lake Superior water?

I've got a 165 mile drive to get there so even though they are serving hor d'ouervres I'm thinking about getting a light dinner some place close by about 5.

Now come on guys. We can't really call this winter camping, not in May. Unique camping for sure but not real winter camping. I used to winter camp in the Keweenaw, in a tent, in January, in 10 degree weather. That was winter camping. It seemed like 90% of our time was spent doing thin...

Very interesting time to be on the Island. I'm so jealous.
