Re: On A Mission, Can You Help?
We'll do clif bars, but other than that, I don't really buy anything other than ingredients. I dehydrate meals ahead of time. I think they taste as good or better than freeze dried meals and are definitely less expensive.

Re: Early spring for the bugs?
I'm not familiar with the relationship between weather in Houghton and on IR, but this week the Houghton forecast is calling for lows between 22 and 30F for 4 nights. Hopefully that will translate to something similar on IR and serve to knock them down a little bit. If this isn't the case, I don't w...

Re: New Park Regulations for Food Storage
I may be guilty of necro-posting here, but I'm sincerely trying to figure out how hanging food will keep the squirrels out of my food stuffs. It sounds like most people are keeping their food in sealed bags in their tents with a cover over it. Has their been any experience from those here where that...

Re: New look for Park Service Website
I like the new skin, but searches aren't working. Both the find a park link and search nps.gov just sit and spin for me.

Re: 4 Nights In/Out from Rock Harbor
Thanks for the kind words.
We're both pretty excited about the trip. At this point, all we need to do is replace a few odd and ends that got dinged up or used up last year and wait on the new stove to get here. That will leave us plenty of time to change the route about 4 more times.

Re: 4 Nights In/Out from Rock Harbor
After looking at options on the map this weekend, I'm strongly inclined to do this one: Ranger III Perfect Plan Tuesday: Depart at 3pm travel from Rock Harbor to Lane Cove via the Tobin Trail. (6.9 miles) Wednesday: Depart from Lane Cove travel to Daisy Farm via the Greenstone Trail. (6.9 miles) Thu...

Re: Thunderstorms
We've just always tried to look at the trees around us and stay away from those that looked like trouble in a high wind situation. I don't really know what else we could do. I'm curious to hear the advice of others on this topic.

Re: 4 Nights In/Out from Rock Harbor
Big miles don't really worry us ... at this point :D . We were doing 6-10/day last year in Yosemite with some crazy elevation gains and losses, so I think 6-10/day on the island should be fine. That being said, I don't want to cram the itinerary so full we can't wet a line. Amazon says my map should...

Re: 4 Nights In/Out from Rock Harbor
Thanks for the welcome!
We're on the Ranger, so we'll get there at 3pm on the 29th and leave on Saturday morning. This will be a hiking trip. I'm encouraged by rafiki's 2 Ranger III options.
I only wish we had more time on the island.

4 Nights In/Out from Rock Harbor
Hello everyone, I decided to stop lurking and register today. I've been combing through the site and have found lots of great info. I would like to throw this out there and see if I can gain any advice. This will our first trip to the island. It will be me and my 17 yo son. Our first 'real" tri...
