Re: Salmon Runs

Maybe address your question to the park service or the Michigan DNR, Fisheries Division.

Looking at the NPS website, you can find Coho, Chinook and Atlantic salmon in the waters bordering Isle Royale. No idea if they run there or not.

Re: East Feldtman Lake Trail

.......Makes you wonder how long it takes an old trail to disappear. If moose, and other wildlife, continue to use them, parts of a closed trail may stay visible for a long time. Many years back, they moved the campground on Lake Whittlesey from the eastern side of the lake about a mile to the west...

Re: Point Houghton from Siskiwit Campground

Back in the early 1990’s, we kayaked from Malone Bay to Siskiwit Bay and back. A long paddle (too long actually) that took us along the north shore of the Houghton Ridge Peninsula. Like any ridge you find on Isle Royale, the Houghton Ridge is very steep on the north side and more gradual on the sout...

Re: Ferry to Isle in late September

After Labor Day, the amount of people going to Isle Royale drops dramatically. On the east end, Rock Harbor Lodge, the cabins and restaurant all close on September 12th.

Re: Campsites with shelters.

I’ll be the contrarian here. After Labor Day, the number of people going to Isle Royale drops dramatically. I visited the SW part of the island last year, right after Labor Day, and had no problem finding an open shelter anywhere in my travels. The tent and tent paraphernalia I brought along was jus...

Re: Cooking in shelters

I plead guilty to doing this. Years back, at Duncan Bay Narrows, were were stuck in our shelter during an all-day rain (cold and windy too). We made meals inside our shelter with our stoves and even moved the outdoor picnic table inside the shelter so we had something to sit on. Of course we exercis...

Re: Malone Bay or Chippewa Harbor Side Trip?

I’m a big fan of Malone, primarily because of its remoteness. If you want to be alone, go here. Most hikers just don’t go to Malone, because it’s a “one-way in” campground. Once you’re there, you have to backtrack and take the same trail out to return to the Greenstone. It is much more popular with ...

Re: Packing for boat Voyager

Not the same as trekking poles, fishing poles, etc., but with my kayak paddles, I just tape them together and place next to my folding kayak (broken down into its bags). Just be sure that when you get to your destination, you tell the guys unloading your stuff that the trekking poles are yours. BTW,...

Re: Hiking with Inflatable Stand Up Paddleboard

Not with a paddleboard, but I have a Klepper (folding kayak) and frequently break it down into its bags whenever I have to portage. It takes some time to break it down and reassemble, but I much rather do that than to carry a full-size kayak on my back. If it works for a Klepper, it should work for ...

Re: Backcountry/CrossCountry Questions - Stick Stoves

.......Do you have any recommendations for more favorable crosscountry explorations?...... Bushwalking in the NE part of the island can be a challenge. You’ll be in thick boreal forest with spruce and balsam fir everywhere. Plus, there’s the terrain. Take your pick, ridge or valley (often a lowland...

Re: Wi-Fi at Rock Harbor

It worked fine last Friday (5/29), when I used it. Again, not blazingly fast, but more than adequate for checking email and web browsing. There were two other people in the guest house with me and we all had no problems logging on and catching up on things.

Wi-Fi at Rock Harbor

For those who want to stay connected while on the Island, there is free wi-fi at the Rock Harbor Lodge "Guest House." Not the fastest wi-fi in the world, but it does work. The password is "rockharbor," one word, with no spaces. It's on from 7:00 AM to 9:00 PM. They ask you not to...

Re: [OFFICIAL] 2015 bug report

I just got back from Rock Harbor earlier today. (5/30). Spent most of the week in the northeast part of the park. Definitely no bugs anywhere near the Lake Superior shore, but I did pick up some Black Flies and Mosquitoes on the Greenstone around Mount Franklin and around Mt. Ojibway. I suspect anyb...

Grand Marais isn't too terribly far away. About a 35 minute drive. Lot of motels to choose from too.
