Re: Downtime activities at camp?
My hiking partner and I learned to play cribbage on the island. We (he) made an ultralight cribbage board out of a paint stir stick and a couple of tooth picks. you can play with a standard deck. just print the instructions before you leave.

FYI: after you book the taxi and give them the number in your group, any extra people get charged as if they are part of a separate trip... full price

Re: Lightweight, compact binoculars
have you thought about a monocular? I carry a 10x25 monocular. its only a couple of ounces and sits well in a shirt pocket. and its dirt cheap. I am looking at what looks like the same as mine on amazon for $15

Re: One thing you wish you knew...
Consider bringing a good-sized rain tarp. It makes cooking and relaxing in camp so much more pleasant on rainy days. I use a $5 vinyl rain poncho. a bit of rigging and it works well. When I go with others we overlap and have a larger area. multipurpose as a ground tarp, a poncho, quick and flexible...

Re: One thing you wish you knew...
Do I have to pick just one? If so, here it is: The island is rougher hiking than I expected. The constant up-and-downs over ridges really wear on me. As a result, I would have planned shorter hiking days than I usually expect to do. This is true even with lots of experience on the UP mainland and i...

Re: Water filter
This came up in a different thread, but is worth noting here also. Many of the gravity filters use the same hollow fiber membrane system and can stop working in the off season just from water drying and leaving minerals behind. I stopped carrying the back flush syringe for my Sawyer Squeeze system b...

Re: Clothing in June
I agree with Ingo. it can get cold. I have extra clothes in the car and check the weather just before I leave to decide on the "extra layer" if cold is forecast. I usually have some fleece sleeping/camp clothes to keep my bag clean and to be cleanish and dry in camp. But I have put on ever...

I carry this one: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B018BH9VBW/?coliid=I2FMLPW7FNCV28&colid=2CZF2333GHHSD&psc=1&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_it I can usually get a signal at most campgrounds. Campgrounds, not camp sites. I am the weird one wandering to and fro, twisting my raised hand around. I like this o...
