Re: First time IR trip in May. Does my gear list have any glaring holes?

Add : *SLEEPING PAD. This is one of the most critical pieces of equipment for you to take. I use a Thermarest Z-Lite which you should be able to get for ~$30. *Addition pair each wool socks and undies. Things could get wet and stay wet, or you could be blessed with sunshine and warm temps and be ab...

Food dehydrator recommendations?

Based on some feedback in my other thread, just curious if anyone here has a recommendation for a good food dehydrator? The most recent posts about food dehydration are many years old and just wondering if anyone has gotten on the DIY bandwagon lately.

Thank you in advance!

Re: Minong in May?

Thank you both for your incredibly helpful feedback.

I think I'm going to stick with the 5/14 arrival. Colder temps give an incentive to keep moving. Minimal bugs, fewer people will be great. And the showers at RH should be fired up by the time I get back there.

Re: Busyness of Island in Early June/Itinerary

Lane to McCargoe is a long day, but very doable. Just an FYI to expect Lane to be busy. It seems to be a normal destination for people getting off the ferry to rush to. I split camp two years ago with some folks using bivy sacks. E Chickenbone didn't look all that bad, but during my trek through the...

Minong in May?

I'm planning to hit the Minong for my first time in May. Plan is to roll in to Rock Harbor 5/14 and be on the Minong headed West by 5/16. I've gone through some of the past weather reports but wanted to know if anyone has specific feedback about the Minong that early in the year. Lots of comments ab...

Re: Vegan Backpacking Food

Thanks everyone for the great suggestions! Something I just considered this morning is dehydrating my own meals as well. Off to search the forum for info on that! Most backpackers I know are willing to go vegetarian or even vegan, as long as the herbivore agrees to be the cook and understands that i...

Vegan Backpacking Food

Can't believe I found a topic that hasn't been covered! I'm planning my first backpacking trip since switching to a plant-based diet last year. I'm a fan of all the traditional backpacking foods, including everything from Mountain House to Pakit Gourmet to Knorr rice/pasta sides. But almost all of i...

I had no idea until just now you could purchase an annual pass through REI. Mind blown.

Re: What are you spending your REI dividend on? 2018 Edition

I only have $27 this year, so maybe a pair of Darn Toughs or trail meals. I'm happy with all my current gear.

Re: Rain pant recommendations

Probably not what you're looking for, but I love it. http://www.zpacks.com/accessories/cloudkilt.shtml I've seen those, and intrigued me if I did more straight backbacking. Unfortunately they don't work well sitting in a canoe--or for warmth when it's 40 something and the wind is blowing 20 somethi...

Re: Water shoes for lakes?

I bring water shoes to protect my feet from cuts and abrasions in rocky areas. My feet are my ticket to an enjoyable backpacking trip, and I like to keep them in good conditon. I also use the water shoes as a general purpose camp shoe, and give my barking dogs a rest from the hiking boots at the en...

Re: Water shoes for lakes?

I would wear the shoes not just for rocks but for the mussel shell's you'll find. Those can be pretty sharp and I would not want to get sliced by one. When I was at W Chickenbone I saw several broken shells.

Re: Favorite Campsites

Daisy Farm: Had a nice time in shelter 10.
Moskey: Shelter 3 or 7. #7 has a direct view out toward the sunset.
McCargoe: Shelter #7
Lane Cove: Tent only, but I enjoyed campsite #3.
