Re: Ist Time "Seniors" Need Advice

Over the years, I've base camped at Daisy Farm, Chippewa Harbor, McCargo Cove, Belle Isle, and Malone Bay, Stays have been as long as 14 days (usually May before stay limits). Moskey Basin is nice because you can fish the basin or do a quick, short hike up to Lake Richie, too. Chippewa has had some ...

Re: Pukaskwa National Park, Ontario, Canada

I usually get topographic maps from the Canadian government. Sometimes, though, they are 1:50000. As far as I know, Pukaskwa in totally undeveloped and you can start at either end, but there are no trails or roads. I spend the summers in the UP and Lake Superior is totally unpredictable, even in the...

Re: Ist Time "Seniors" Need Advice

My mantra for any visit to Isle Royale is hike less; enjoy more. Your itinerary is pretty energetic and, having done hikes like that in the past when I was a young pup, and I think that slowing down will allow you to do more fishing, enjoying the sights, etc. Some of the best times I've had at IR is...

Re: Ist Time "Seniors" Need Advice

I'd split the 8 of you, so you aren't considered a "group" and that would allow you to use shelters, although that time of the year, I suspect it won't be busy. As an "old guy" (JohnH, don't touch that line), I think that I would do Three Mile the first night (take the Tobin Harb...

Re: Dry bag size and contents

Yes, all but 2 of my trips since 1976 have been 2 weekers, including 5 backpacking. I learned a long time ago that since it takes me two days to get to Grand Portage and 2 days to get home, 5 or 6 days on the Island isn't really worth it. It usually takes me a couple days to get disconnected from th...

Re: Dry bag size and contents

A lot depends on your boat. I generally go out to IR for two weeks at a time. My boat is an Impex Serenity 17.5 with front and rear compartments as well as a day compartment. Over the years I've experimented (I've got a dry bag museum in my basement ranging from the OR small to the big 35s and a Dul...

Gee, if she failed to appear three times, I can imagine what her attitude was when she was on the Island.

Re: Bucketlist

I've read both her books while on the island. That's the only way to go. It gives a real feeling of reality to them, even though it is fiction.

Re: First Aid

A well stocked first aid kit is a must, including pain meds (Vicoden), broad spectrum anti-biotic pills and creames, anti-diarrheals, plus the usual dressings, band-aids, etc. There are emergency personal location beacons that you can order. But those should only be used in an extreme emergency wher...

Death of a Longtime Isle Royale Friend

Thought you would like to know that Chris Vizanko passed away last Friday from a 10 year fight with Cancer. Chris and his wife were well know visitors to Malone Bay in the early spring and were also well known as organizers of the Friday Night Fish Fry at Malone Bay Campground in late May. He will b...

Re: Challenge: Funding George Desort's next Documentary

You did it. Forum members donated $275 to this project and it is over the top. If you haven't given, please do so (email me privately and I'll tell you where you can send donations). There are still matching funds out there.

Re: Challenge: Funding George Desort's next Documentary

OK folks, When I think of the number of forum members here, how much we spend to get to the Island and outfit ourselves, I'm a bit disappointed on the lack of participation in funding this project (less than $200 from forum members). I had a nice chat with George yesterday and I'm excited about this...

Challenge: Funding George Desort's next Documentary

I met George at Daisy Farm in May and we had a nice talk. I was intrigued by his project. So, here is the deal..... Isle Royale Forum Members. I have a source that will match your donation, dollar for dollar, up to a grand total of $1000.00. That's right, if the combined pledges from forum members o...
