Re: Photo of Voyager II
Vomit comet? I've not heard that one before. I finished trip number 50 for the year on the Sea Hunter today, all of those trips and all of those passengers, only two people got sick. I don't know of a boat that doesn't move around given the right sea conditions, including 1000' bulk freighters, but ...

Re: Zip Code for Isle Royal?
It all boils down to why you want the zip code. If you are looking for geographical purposes it is likely 49...., if you want to send something there via US Mail, 55605 is all you need to know.

Re: Photo of Voyager II
That is an old photo from 2006. When the Wenonah was moved to Hat Point Marina to make way for the Grand Portage National Monument Heritage Center, it was best suited on the inside of the dock due to exposure to the open lake. With the VII being gone ovenight three times a week we parked it on the o...

Re: Ryden's Cafe - Closed for 2013?
Yes, Ryden's cafe is closed. It appears to be a permanent closure. The storage is actually packages waiting to be picked up for the parcel handling service they provide. Canadians order products online and have them shipped to Ryden's address, cross the border and pick them up saving money and weeks...

Re: Warming Lake Superior affecting fish
Interesting article, what is interesting about it is that it is, for the most part meaningless. Almost every statement is prefaced with "we think", "could" or "may". Showing once again that no matter how much time and money is spent researching bodies of water the size ...

Re: Winter Weather Conditions on the Island
What a difference a week has made. No shelf ice on the shores of the big lake were found anyplace I went on the island. All the white landscape is now brown or green with the only snow remaining being shrinking drifts in shaded/sheltered areas. I was able to get just past Beaver Island in Washington...

Re: Winter Weather Conditions on the Island
Things are improving rather rapidly considering that a week ago Thursday 8-10 inches of fresh snow fell. The sat photos of the island and surrounding shore lands are at least looking mostly brown rather than all white like a week ago. I am going to the island on Sunday to pick people up and if I am ...

Re: Ranger III 1st trip
The Ranger failed to get to Windigo today, the ice was still too thick and very solid about 300 yds from the dock and rather than facing potential damage to the boat they were forced to return to Houghton. It will probably be a week before another attempt is made. Hopefully it will start to move aro...

Re: First boat
What a mess today has been. Anyone affected by this please accept my appologies for the time you've wasted, if I could have changed it I would have. We have 8" from Thursday and temps in the 20's today. Talked with maint people on the island this morning only to learn that there is 3-5' of snow...

Re: Longest continuous stay on IRNP
Last year we had a couple students onboard doing their thesis about something on the island, (I can't recall about what), and they were in the back country for over 60 days. That seems about as long of a continuous camping stay that I have seen. I know a couple people that lived on the island year a...

Re: Ryden's Cafe - Closed for 2013?
The restaurant in the Hotel opens at 7am, Voyageur II passengers need to be on the dock ready to load at 6:45am so it's not an option at all. Same with the grill in the c-store, last year they opened at 9am although the store opens at 6am so the nuke sandwich or rice krispy bars/donuts and coffee/ju...

Re: First boat
Hi, I have been in Portage quite a bit, also working in northern Alberta and BC. Lately coming into Portage from east of Nipigon, ON as we have good ice cover near St. Ignace island and the whitefish and salmon have been very receptive to my lures. The marina in Duluth where the boats are was just a...

Re: Ice Bridge Forming to Canada?
The Canadian ice maps are somewhat deceiving, there has not been complete ice coverage to the island this winter. Just like open water forecasts will predict wind speeds and wave height, they are not absolute and vary greatly by just a few miles of change in location, these ice maps are potentials f...

Re: Duncan Bay Dock
If there was not enough money to send an employee (who, I was told opted to volunteer if need be) to do a program at a show that boasts the largest concentration of Isle Royale's visitor demographic, there can't be enough money to start removing perfectly good and viable structures, can there? If fu...
