A taboo topic?
After reading the "haunted hikes "thread it made me think.
How many known cemeteries are on the island. Now I dont want to know about all of the "ILLEGALS" that just gives me the eeby- geebys!!!! But I am curious from a historical standpoint.Isle Royale has a long history the map has limited info. I deffinately understand why.I wouldn't want to have a million tourist using me for a point of interest. But still curiosity has gripped me.
Thanks in advance.....or my apologies for bringing it up.
Also how many towns or settlements were on the island during its hayday?

If I recall correctly, there is a marked grave along the trail from the Edison Fishery to the Rock Harbor light.
There is also a small cemetery plot on Cemetery Island.

I read online, and found 2 listings. I found that some had wooden grave markers. With the park services limited budget I was wondering if they maintain these historical places.I would assume that they fall by the wayside though.too many structures and things to up keep ......so little money.Once the historical places are gone there is no turning back.
Thanks tampico for the feedback. That brings my count to four!

The Find A Grave Beta County Mapper shows two cemeteries on Isle Royale: Cemetery Island and Isle Royale Cemetery. Each seems to have two graves.

I seem to recall that at the Wolf Study hq near the Edson Fishery that there is a mass grave (the result of a drunken riot between two mining camps -- many fatalities).

Re: A taboo topic?
The National Park Service's list of structures database only lists Cemetery Island but is has some information that is different from the Find a Grave service.
