Algae Bloom Water Warning In Effect for Lake Ritchie and Chickenbone Lake

Post by Midwest Ed »

There is an algae bloom alert presently in effect for all of Lake Ritchie. Do not drink the water or use it for cooking. No amount of filtering, boiling or purification can make it safe to drink. It is very harmful to ingest.

Chickenbone Lake has been added to the list of affected lakes.

Everything I've read about blooms would indicate that not a lot is known for sure regarding their life cycle. They can disappear fairly quickly in some cases. Their cause seems to be blamed primarily on temperature, nutrient availability and the water flow or movement (or lack thereof). Man made nutrients from septic systems and fertilizer runoff seemed to get the blame most of the time but of course for Lake Ritchie these would seem to be non-factors. No one really knows for sure all or maybe even any of the contributing factors. In 2014 a large bloom in Lake Erie shut down the water supply of Toledo, Ohio for 3 days.
