Isle Royale Closed for 2020?

Post by treeplanter »

Not sure what to make of this article. Sounds like closing the park for 2020 is a possibility.

They said they'd make up their minds by May 1st. So maybe we'll find out this week.

I noticed the Park Service has updated their website. The Houghton Visitors Center is closed until further notice and will not be opening on May 18th. "The closure will be evaluated daily as conditions evolve."

Rock Harbor Lodge and Windigo store/cabins still slated to open on June 26. https://www.nps.gov/isro/planyourvisit/ ... -lodge.htm

The Ranger III is purportedly beginning service on June 30. https://www.nps.gov/isro/planyourvisit/ ... ctions.htm

But new ferry reservations out of Grand Portage were put on hold almost 2 weeks ago, pending a decision by the NPS.

Fingers crossed for our planned trip the third week of July...

Michigan's Governor has just released new regulations for the U.P. and Northern Lower Peninsula. Restaurants and bars can reopen on Friday, May 22nd (following safety protocols). Hopefully it will encourage the Park Service to go forward with their reopening plans.

Looks like Isle Royale is closed until further notice. No ferry service, no lodging at Rock Harbor in 2020. Not sure about Windigo. Or if you take your own boat. Here's the details:

Without ferry service, I guess my planned canoe trip to Isle Royale has been lengthened now, in paddling to the island! Just kidding!
