The G.P.I.R. (Grand Portage Isle Royale) Transportation Line website has this information about stove fuel on their vessels:

“Camp and stove fuel,(butane, propane, white gas) can be contained in your packs if you are riding on the Voyageur II, except for carry on packs inside the passenger cabins. If you are riding on the Wenonah, all fuel must be removed from packs and placed in the containers on the dock near the boarding stairs. This fuel will be stowed in lockers above deck and returned to you upon arrival.”

I looked for specific transportation information about the Ranger via the National Park Service website. I was unsuccessful. Here’s where I looked. It contains contact information where more specific questions can be posed.

I had it wrong, we're on the Queen IV. Is there anything specific to know about that one?

Ed- Thanks for going out of your way to help answer the questions about the Ranger III; it's very much appreciated.

The IR Queen website has this FAQ:

"Can we take our own gasoline to the island?

No. Gasoline is available on the island throughout the season. We do transport backpacking stove fuel in well closed, small containers. These will be stowed separately. Do not stow fuel in containers with twist-on caps in backpacks!"

It looks like the Queen's rule is similar to the retired Wenonah. Stove fuel must be taken out of packs and presented for separate stowage. This is probably due to one or two reason. 1) To make sure the caps are tightened securely so there is no leakage and 2) insure it is stowed in a location where ventilation is well controlled.

I do not know if the rules for G.P.I.R.'s new vessel, "Sea Hunter" is closer to those of the retired Wenonah or the current Voyageur II.

The Sea Hunter should be like the Voyageur II, since the packs will be stored topside. Guess we'll know for sure when she sails this Friday! :D

To round out the whole "fuel in packs while travelling to/from the island" issue, the Royale Air Service does NOT allow ANY fuel on board their planes. From their website and verified by recent posts here:

"Hazardous materials and weapons are not allowed on the plane. Regular camping equipment (small knives/hatchets) are allowed if packed in your gear. Stove fuel (liquid or gas) will have to be purchased at the store at Windigo or Rock Harbor upon arrival."

It appears the only open issue is finding a published regulation for the Ranger III. I can't imagine it is much different than the other vessels but I just could not find it published anywhere.
