The Queen out of service as of 7/29/15

Post by johnhens »

The Queen made contact with the bottom across from its dock in Copper Harbor. The vessel is being examined to determine what if any damage occured. Transit for 7/30 has been cancelled. Call the office if you have questions.

The seaplane service must be working overtime, with business booming this week. I see a short term business opportunity, shuttling people from Grand Portage to Copper Harbor.

This would be a bad time to be on the Queen, actually (but I do feel for those who are trying to make the trip at the moment) - the wind has been wild in the Keweenaw for a couple days (especially yesterday), and the waves are up. I work next to the airport, and our weather station recorded some gusts in the 50s. Someone drowned at McLain State Park yesterday.

I don't suppose the Ranger can make any extra trips while the Queen is out of service to help pick up the slack.

Thought I saw the Ranger was going to do trips to help out if the Queen folks need it.

The Queen has cancelled its trips till Tuesday August 4. The Ranger is trying to pick up the slack. If you need transit to the Island, call the NPS 906-482-0984.

A Sunday/Monday Ranger trip would be the most feasible addition to their schedule. Beyond that, I wonder if they could pull off a same day round trip, leaving at say 7:00am, arriving at 1:00 pm, one hour on the island to refuel/clean/disembark/board, and then leaving at 2:00 and returning to Houghton by 8:00. Would make for an awfully long day for the crew, though.

I would think they would have a better idea at the end of Monday, 8/3.

Latest update Monday AM:

LATEST NEWS, Monday morning: The Queen is under repairs. I have no further update. Tuesday's trip is 75% chance. Weds looks more probable. But still no guarantees. Sorry, again. I will put up info here immediately.

Just double checking... It sounds like the Queen is back to its regular schedule, correct? I have a reservation for the 12th.
