Several years ago, I was in Windigo after a backpacking trip, with an extra day, and I ended up sharing my shelter with a family that had come over for a day trip only, and then gotten mixed up, thought they were on the nature trail loop but were actually headed down the Minong Ridge trail, and missed their ferry back to GP. The rangers lent them sleeping bags and a flashlight from emergency supplies, brought them to the campground and found them space in a shelter (I was in mine solo, so adequate room for 4 more), and directed them to the store for food and toothbrushes......I gathered that happens a couple times each summer to day trippers, even though the ferry did wait overtime for them and whistled several times.
