I think you’ll be fine. I’d bet money you’ll hit some snow on the island though. I’m moving my trip back a couple weeks because I’m not looking for a true winter expedition.

I am on the Voyager on May 16 and have been wondering about conditions too. I am pretty confident that I will get to Windigo ok but my plan is to be dropped off at McCargo. I can envision that not working. I will just have to be flexible. A few years ago I was in the same position and ended up on the second boat to the island because of ice. There was some snow on the island but none on trails. Just enough to allow us to point and say, Gee, snow!

Don't count on hiking the Pictured Rocks area without calling ahead about conditions. I live just a few miles west of Munising and there is still several feet of snow in the woods.

Snow mobile'rs are still out and about in several areas of the U.P. Even though, according to the DNR, the official season is over there is still a 2 foot base in some areas.

Stopped by the Voyageur II dock and chatted with Captain Don. Only 14 scheduled first boaters. 10 being dropped off at Windigo, 3 at McCargoe Cove, and little ole me at Chippewa Harbor. Off the grid for two weeks. No phone, no lights, no motorcars, not a single luxury...

Looking at today's NOAA satellite imagery. It appears the last of the ice (at least visible by MODIS) is gone. Siskiwit Lake and Amygdaloid Channel cleared up in the last 2 days.
