What's up with the seaplane?

Questions about how to get to the island and where to stay near points of departure.

What's up with the seaplane?

Post by srparr »

I tried to get to the website of the Royale Air Service a few days ago and it wasn't available. Tried again this evening, and it is still not working.

"domain not valid" and "This site is temporarily unavailable."

Anyone heard of any issues with seaplane service in 2009?

From what I understand, Royale Air Service has ceased operations. I don't have absolute verification of this, but I will try to find out. In the meantime, I would make plans using water transportation from Grand Portage or Copper Harbor.

Doh! That's what I was afraid of.

Thanks for looking into it Capt Don. I hope that things work out for them, but in the meantime I'll plan my 2009 trip around water transport.

After some further investigation, I found a few are still holding out some hope. I am concerned due to the fact that they eliminated the website, have nothing going at this time, and the way they ended last season, just ended with no mention of "next season". Hope they can get it together if its what they want to do.

Just noticed that their website is back up now. They do not have a 2009 schedule posted ... but say they are in the process of finalizing it for summer 2009.

Sigh. We already made alternate arrangements for this year ...

The Park Service informed me that there is seaplane service to the Island this summer. They said it's the same people that have done it the last few years.

Royal Air will again be providing flights to and from the island, their schedules and rates are on the website.
