Finally had an opportunity to try my platy.....all I can say is what a sweet unit! Way easier and faster then using a pump.I believe that I am a convert.I tried it with and without the carbon filter.Without the carbon the water had a little off taste to it. With the carbon, just like bottled water! The water I filtered was pretty dark,a creek draining a swamp.

Thanks for the tip on the air bubbles!
I had a minor airlock issue, then it dawned on me to loosen the bottle adapter so it could let the air out :-D

Really impressed...thanks for the suggestions!

I have to mention it again, just because I have been using it without issue for quite some time now, with the usual disclaimer - this isn't me but it's the exact same setup:

p.s. - my backup is micropur/stove

Just landed my Sawyer as a Dad's Day gift. I haven't used it yet, but was wondering on proper cleaning/ drying techniques as the packaging doesn't mention that. I know to boil my ceramic filter, but you can't do that with the sawyer.

So...how do you clean and store your Sawyer Squeeze?

To field clean it use the syringe ....fill with clean water and backflush....repeat as nescessary. For long term storage use a few drops of bleach in a bag of water and flush it through...this is supposed to keep the nasties from growing.

The platy uses the same bleach and store system.

Picked up a couple of the Sawyer Personal Water Bottle Filters a while back on a clearance table. Took the filter out and turned it into a 10 liter gravity system - absolutely great for groups. Here is a parts list...

I used the yellow bag from this set for the dirty water:

We used a DIY bag made from vacuum sealer bag for clean water. It worked okay but I recently found this bag that we'll use going forward:

Also have one of these that worked fairly well for the clean water bag:

Use a soldering iron, or heated up socket, to melt a hole in the dirty water bag for this hose barb:

Picked up some of these as a shut off "valve":
http://smile.amazon.com/dp/B002VA5U3E/r ... 9JN4HGODNC

And some of these for backflushing:
http://smile.amazon.com/dp/B004FKFFRE/r ... 8EH744FXWQ

I used rubber tubing from an old water filter, but this is what Ive got in my cart for making the next one. Should be the same as what I have:

For hanging the dirty bag, I just put a loop of rope around the neck of the bag. Dont try to hang by the buckle - it wont last very long.

Here's an option to save some money. Almost the same tubing, better quality grade, only 5 feet long but it comes with it's own shutoff valve. Just don't tell anyone it's original purpose or if you do make sure they know it was never used as such.
