*Seven* Nights in August

My best friend and I are planning our second trip to the island August 9 through 15th.
We trekked from Rock Harbor to Windigo along the Greenstone in 2006.

This year we are flying into Rock Harbor on Saturday and flying back from Rock Harbor on Friday. That leaves us with Saturday for weather delays.

Our working itinerary is:

Saturday: Rock Harbor to Daisy Farm
Sunday: Daisy Farm to Lake Richie
Monday: Lake Richie to Chippewa Harbor
Tuesday: Chippewa Harbor to Chickenbone West
Wednesday: Chickenbone West to McCargo Cove (Lots of down time to explore)
Thursday: McCargo to Lane Cove
Friday: Lane Cove to Rock Harbor

This itinerary lets us cover the Rock Harbor, the Indian Portage Trail, the Lane Cove and the Mount Franklin Trails. We hiked the Tobin Harbor Trail in '06.

Any comments or suggestions?

Sunday night I would think about Moskey Basin. One of my favorite places on the island, and nicer than Lake Richie IMO.

mihiker, your plan seems very doable.

McCargoe to Lane Cove will be your longest stretch, but once you get to the split for Daisy Farm on the Greenstone, the trek gets easy. Overall, it's not a "hard" trek, per se, but the trek back up onto the Greenstone from the Chickenbone basin is kind of a nightmare.

Any idea what that vertical elevation change is for that hike up and out of McCargo Cove to the Greenstone?

I agree that the Climb out from (east) Chickenbone is somewhat brutal.
In 2006 we didn't have much down time.
With this itinerary, we can do some exploring & relaxing.

Less Paul:

It looks to me that Mc Cargo is at around 600-650 ft. The Greenstone just east of Chickenbone East is at 931 ft. and climbs as you head east to Mt Ojibway to 1100 ft.

Have you or anyone else here taken the Towab Trail at LSPP and can perhaps compare it to the East Chickenbone to Greenstone climb?

The Towab has one ass-kicker climb to go with the ups and downs. That’d give me something to compare it to.

I’m just wondering if I should start looking for a backpacker’s portable defib unit.

Less Paul: I have an entire elevation profile available, I just have to get it from my friend's GPS. I'll get a hold of him before he heads out of town for a week and see if I can get it uploaded.

Plans have changed a little.
We are no longer flying (more about that later)

We will be sailing on the Queen out of Copper Harbor on Saturday the 9th.
We will return to Copper Harbor on Saturday the 16th.

Our new itinerary is:

Saturday: Rock Harbor to Daisy Farm
Sunday: Daisy Farm to MOSKEY BASIN
Monday: MOSKEY BASIN to Chippewa Harbor
Tuesday: Chippewa Harbor to Chickenbone West
Wednesday: Chickenbone West to McCargo Cove (Lots of down time to explore)
Thursday: McCargo to Lane Cove
Friday: Lane Cove to THREE MILE or Rock Harbor (Maybe a second noght at Lane Cove)
Thinking of Hiking to Lookout Louise on Friday.

This itinerary lets us cover the Rock Harbor, the Indian Portage Trail, the Lane Cove and the Mount Franklin Trails. We hiked the Tobin Harbor Trail in '06.

That's pretty much gonna be my route with one more day than I'll have.

I won't be doing Lane Cove or Chickenbone West, but adding Lake Ritchie.

I'm a little over 2 weeks out and just effin' dyin' with anticipation!

Hmm. Might be overly ambitious. I forget that "Royale Miles" are super-sized.
I'll review that segment. Thanks for the heads up. Maybe we'll break that one up.

And I have 38 days to go.
I keep sorting and re-sorting my gear.
It's diving my wife (not a hiker) nuts.

I would opt for the second night at Lane Cove and then hike directly to RH to catch the Queen at 2:45. Lane Cove is beautiful and you might want a down day after the hike from McCargoe.

There was a sign on the door at the vistor center in RH that Lane cove was closed for renovation.
