Itinerary Advice-Chippewa Harbor to Rock Harbor

Post by Bend123 »

1st time trip to IR with husband and 2 kids (ages 13 and 16, both looking forward to the trip). Kids have done 2-day backpacking trip, so this will be their longest thus far. Would appreciate any advice on our plans.

Would love to see moose and beavers (of course, can't count on it, but would love feedback on our best chances). Aiming to have manageable days with evenings to rest and relax.

Day 1:
Ferry from Copper Harbor to Rock Harbor;
Water taxi from Rock Harbor>Chippewa Harbor
Hike Chippewa Harbor>Lake Richie campground

Day 2:
Lake Richie campground>McCargoe Cove campground via Indian Portage Trail (along W. Chickenbone Lake)
(Possibly drop packs and hike to Minong mine and Pine Mountain)

Day 3:
McCargoe Cove campground >Daisy Farm campground via E. Chickenbone/Greenstone/Daisy Farm trails

Day 4:
Daisy Farm campground >Threemile campground via Mt Objway/Greenstone/Mt Franklin trails
(Was told Rock Harbor trail between Daisy Farm and Threemile campgrounds is tricky???)

Day 5:
Threemile campground>Rock Harbor>Ferry to Copper Harbor (2:45)
(Possibly hike Stoll trial if time enough before ferry)

I can't speak to the Chippewa trail. that is one of the few I haven't been on. the rest of the hike looks quite comfortable given proper pack weights etc. The Minong mine is worth the trip. On my trips the moose have been quite predictable at McCargoe. Just before dawn and just after sunset has worked the best for me. Other than there, low laying swampy areas are where moose feed. Quite is very necessary.

Rock Harbor trail between Daisy Farm and Three mile aren't really any different than the rest of the trails on the island. being one of the most traveled trails on the Island, it certainly isn't "bad". That being said, the Greenstone in that area is beautiful and worth the detour.

Thanks, Base654! Much appreciated!

barb.dobberteen - We'll be there later next week, so our timing is off. However, I'm not sure there would be a price difference. I understood the IR Resorts water taxi to be a per person rate. I don't remember if there was a per person break.

Check your price on the water taxi. When I used it last year, going to Malone, it was the same price for two as for one. If you where splitting the cost, it's better to have more people. Have a great trip!
