Greenstone Ridge route

Post by Bald_Eagle »

Hi all,

My brother and I are visiting the island for the first time on Friday. We are planning to hike Greenstone Ridge, and I wanted to run the following itinerary by you all for input. We are both in good shape. I have done a decent amount of backpacking and generally know what I’m doing, but this will be his first backpacking trip. Here’s the proposed route:

Day 1 - Arrive at Windigo at 9:30a.m.
Hike from Windigo to Lake Desor

Day 2 - Lake Desor to Hatchet Lake

Day 3 - Hatchet Lake to Chicken Bone West

Day 4 - Chicken Bone West to Daisy Farm

Day 5 -Daisy Farm to Rock Harbor

June 27 -ferry from Rock Harbor at 7:15am

What do you think? Looks pretty reasonable on the map but I’ve never been to the island. Also would love to hear about the conditions of any of these camps if people have been to them recently.

Also: want to hear about what stretches we will and won’t have water access!

That’s a great, and pretty standard, Greenstone itinerary. The first stretch to S. Desor is the longest dry stretch, and the next day is dry too, up on the ridge. There is ample water at the campsites, which are down off the ridge at the lake shores. Daisy Farm will be your first Lake Superior shore, and it is a great place to relax on the dock. Enjoy!
