July 3/4 in Campgrounds Near Windigo

Post by afarnsle »

Three of us are headed to Windigo from Grand Portage on Friday, July 3. We will be staying only the nights of the 3rd/4th (of course, a major holiday weekend). We are wondering how busy we should expect to find the campgrounds at Hugginin Cove, Feldtmann Lake, or Washington Creek. Will we easily find tent pads? Any replies from people with experience much appreciated. I looked for this question in previous threads and did not find it.

Despite the holiday weekend, you should be able to get a tent site at Huginin Cove or Windigo. You may even be able to get a shelter at Windigo(technically Washington Creek). Feldman Lake only has about 4 campsites but you can always share with someone if all the sites are taken. On the island, it is unusual for a party of three with one tent to not be able to find a corner to pitch your tent somewhere in the campground. 3 tents might be more difficult.

Thank you very much. Just two tents. I was hopeful this would be the answer but I knew people on here had plenty of experience.

In 2001 there were several shelters available at Washington Creek over the 4th holiday.

Hugginin is small, so that could be full.

Feldtmann is a hike and will probably be ok.

Washington Creek is big but easily accessible, so it could be busy, but I still think you'll find a shelter.

Bottom line: The 4th isn't awful at Isle Royale.
