Water Taxi to Chippewa Harbor

Post by ebecker »

Hi Everyone,

I'm planning my 2010 trip to Isle Royale, and I'm thinking about taking a water taxi from Rock Harbor to Chippewa Harbor. We only have 4 nights on the island, so I'm thinking:

Chippewa Harbor- 1st night
Moskey Basin - 2nd night
Daisy Farm - 3rd night
Rock Harbor - 4th night

Any opinions?

This would be a very doable hike and would not tax you too much. With four nights there are other options that you could consider on the east end. For example you could hike:

1. Daisy Farm
2. McCargoe Cove
3. Moskey Basin
4. Rock Harbor

Depending on hiking fitness and other individual needs your itinerary could be the one you originally suggested but include a hike from Daisy, up to Mount Ojibway Tower, and then down to Rock Harbor via the Greenstone and Tobin Harbor Trail. That hike would involve a significant climb up to the ridge-line but would only add about two miles to your last day's hike and would get you onto the ridge where the scenery is quite striking. I would definitely include a stop at the Mt Ojibway Tower. (maybe we could hike over to the tower after setting up camp @ Daisy)

I am not sure if the Daisy Farm Ranger still has Island Informational talks, but that
might be something you may find interesting.

You could probably check schedule in Rock Harbor while you are there.

I'm almost 100% on taking a water taxi to Chippewa Harbor, except now I'm thinking about changing the itinerary to:

1st night - Chippewa Harbor
2nd night - Moskey Basin
3rd night - Lane Cove
4th night - Rock Harbor

The big day would be from Moskey to Lane Cove (10.8 miles w/ some elevation)

Any opinions?

I would make sure you can get a water taxi on the day you arrive to Chippewa. Also have an alternative plan as the water taxi may not go if it is too rough.

I just booked the Water Taxi to Chippewa Harbor. I'm not happy about the 2 person rate, but at least I'm going to have the trip itinerary that I want.
