What causes the mercury level to be so high in the lakes of Isle Royale? The old mines? Acid rain?
I once spoke to researchers who suspected the high mercury was from paper plants along the north shore (CN) of Superior.

Any coal-burning power plant produces mercury. Once airborne, it can go along way.
