The success in their rescue was attributed to their EPIRB (Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon). Never leave shore without one. Make sure you have the newest style with a 406 MHz broadcasting GPS.

Also, kudos to the U.S and Canada Coast Guard.

Good point Ed, it didn't mention a VHF either. The fact that they had to leave their kayak adrift, another Good reason for the Operation Paddle Smart Stickers the USCG is promoting. They did recover their kayak later on shore.

I'd like to get more details on this story and the events leading up to the capsize and separation from their boat. I'm surprised I didn't hear about this earlier, being that it's been a month already.

Any further info, please pass on. Glad they're uninjured and alive!

Damon,
Here is the press release directly from the 9th CG District:

http://www.wadisasternews.com/go/doc/443/900167/

You can call the 9th District's Public Affairs Office in Cleveland (216-902-6020). They will provide whatever additional information they can.

It is unclear from the reports but these folks might have been in the water for for up to 3 hours.
