What sort of fishing rod would you recommend?

Post by michiganitis »

Planning on a 4-6 day backpacking/camping trip to IR in late July. I have pretty much never fished. But I'd like to try to catch some meals while in IR. I have read the regulations. Now...what sort of gear do I bring? I know nothing about fishing so if you could be very explicit, that'd be most helpful. What brand/model pole? What line? What fake bait and lures, etc? I'll probably get some practice fishing in before our trip!

Thanks!

There is a good deal of info in threads already posted here in the "Canoeing, Kayaking, and Fishing" forum. Review all the posts from April 2011 and May 2011.

I just picked up a St. Croix Triumph 6'6" medium action four piece travel rod (TRS66MF4, $99).

Like Inca said, a 4 pc would be nice though I have carried a 2 pc medium-medium light spinning rod 6' or longer with a 2000 series spinning reel (I like Shimano) spooled with at least 8# test Trilene XT. You will also need a couple of wire type leaders 9 or 12" 20# test (I like a sampo type swivel on the end).

As far as lures, check the other threads, but you will need to keep them less than 5/8 oz with the lighter line/rod.
Mepps spinners, daredevils (5 of Diamonds), rapalas.

You will also need a good pair of hemostats and jaw spreaders for pike.
Make sure you check the regs for inland lake fishing.

I have fished from shore (actually I wade out as deep as I can unless leeches are prevalent then I go thigh deep  )
I have never had a problem fishing from shore-its catching from shore that is the problem (had to throw that in!).
You will do fine from shore. Early AM and Late PM are better.
Where are you going?
