License to fish in Superior around IR; must it be Michigan?

Post by eddy_line »

To fish in Lake Superior around IR, must you have a Michigan fishing license? Or could it be Minnesota? Or Wisconsin?

Someone from Illinois or Iowa would have a better chance of using a MN or WI license for more than just an IR visit.

Must be Michigan. If you're coming from Grand Portage, you used to be able to get them at the marina there, but it's been a few years since I've done that so I'd check. You can get 1 day licenses at Windigo or Rock Harbor, but if you're on the Voyageur and getting off at McCargoe or Belle Isle you may not have time for that at Windigo.

For Non-residents:
1 day $7
3 day $21 (new one, huh?)
Annual w/o trout $34
Annual unrestricted $42

Like Ingo said: Isle Royale is part of Michigan; you need a Michigan fishing license to fish any body of water that connects with Lake Superior. You do not need a license to fish the interior lakes.

You can purchase a Michigan fishing license on line...

From the Greenstone:

A Michigan fishing license is
required for fishing in Lake
Superior, including narrow
bays and harbors, and when
transporting fish from the island
to the mainland. If you are under
17 years of age, you may fish
without a license. Licenses are
not required to fish on the inland
waters of Isle Royale; possession
limits are the same as those set
by the State of Michigan. Also
see additional information
on this page regarding special
brook trout regulations.
Anglers should refer to the
Michigan fishing regulations for
possession limits and detailed
license requirements for Lake
Superior (also see the chart
on page 7 for a brief guide to
regulations). Only 24-hour
licenses are available on the
island and only when concession
services are open.
You may purchase a Michigan
fishing license online at
www.michigan.gov/dnr.
