Seeking inland Kayaking partner.

Post by solo1 »

For early September 2017.
Am fairly flexible with regard to route,
dates, number of days for trip, etc;
My plan is to take the Voyageur 2
from Grand Portage, MN.
Am easy going, non-smoker,
lots of outdoor/wilderness experience.
Willing to go with 1-3 more people.
Feel free to respond with any questions
you may have.
Looking forward to hearing from you !

I am planning a first time kayaking trip to the inland lakes and Five Fingers area. I would prefer not to travel alone, but somehow my friends don't find lugging a kayak up and down hills to be a good time. I would have preferred to go in early September, but the soonest I can leave is September 20th. I was planning on taking the Isle Royale Queen out of Copper Harbor on the 22nd, returning to Rock Harbor on the 29th. Are you flexible at all with departure locations? I'm coming from Lower Michigan and Grand Portage adds about 4 hours to my trip each way. It would also mean taking more days off work just because of the ferry schedules. I plan to fish some but am more interested in scenery and hopefully spotting a moose or two. I have a lot of backpacking/kayaking experience - not so much with portaging and Lake Superior shoreline. I did practice a little this weekend and manage 2.5 miles of portage over mostly rolling terrain, which gave me a bit more confidence.

Hi rjackson,
Thank you for your response to my posting for a kayaking partner.
Please read the message that I sent to your personal/private inbox for
this site. I hope that it went through !
By the way, I live in Minnesota, so it would also be out of the way for
me to drive to your location. Also, I have to be back home by the 15th
or 16th. We could meet at a determined location on the Island if you
could possibly go earlier in September (also later the weather really becomes
a concerning factor). Happy Portage Trails, solo1

Sounds like it's not going to work out. I agree about the weather deteriorating later in the month, but it's my only opportunity. Best of luck with your travels.

I decided to try for 2018. Should really have a trip partner.
If interested, please let me know.
Happy Trails.

I'm still planning to go this year, but I will certainly consider it for next year. Ideally, I would leave right after Labor Day, which to me is the best time of year because the weather is generally still warm, the waves (and bugs) a bit lower, and the days a bit longer. I may even be willing to make the drive to Grand Portage - I'd like to take advantage of the Voyageur II taxi service which doesn't work well if leaving from the Michigan side. Feel free to email me directly once you have a plan.
