Itinerary: I've been to the island and backpacked three times in four years and will be returning for my dream trip of canoeing the inland lakes. This will be my first experience canoe camping and I hope it will be the first of many more to come. I don't plan on fishing but plan on experiencing parts of the island I've never seen and relaxing away from civilized society. A week on Isle Royale is always the best escape!

Departure Date: September 2
Coming From/Via: Copper Harbor/Isle Royale Queen IV
Itinerary:

Saturday - Arrive on the Queen, Possibly hike the Stoll trail after getting our permits, and hike to 3-mile via Tobin Harbor trail, and maybe go have a look-see at Suzy's cave.
Sunday - Hike to Daisy farm - seeing Siskowitt mines and whatever else there is to see. Make camp at Daisy FArm
Monday - Hike on to Moskey Basin, and spend 2 consecutive nights there (mon and tues). Possibly day-hiking to places like Chickenbone, Lake Richie and Chippewa Harbor. 10-15 miles day-hikes over rough terrain are no problem for us - it's hiking loaded down that is hard for the little one)
Wednesday - Back to Daisy farm. day-hike the loop to the tower, maybe even to Mt. Franklin.
Thurdsay - Hike back to 30mile - and maybe day-hike in to Lane Cove.
Friday - be in Rock Harbor before noon, (food drop this day) and tour out to Passage Island. Stay in Rock Harbor
Saturday, Go on the Edison Fishery and Roch HArbor Lighthouse tour, and have the boat drop us off at 3-mile on the way back.
Sunday - hike back to Rock Harbor as early as we can - If time and weather permit, canoe to Hidden Lake and climb to Lookout Louise.

Unfortunately that trip fell through due to a death in the family. In an attempt to resurrect something of it, three of us are departing Grand Portage by fishing boat (hope the weather is amenable!) Thursday September 27th bound for Windigo. From there things are a bit tentative, but we are anticipating hiking to Huginnin for Thursday night, then back through Windigo and then possibly day hikes up the Minong, Greenstone and / or Feldtmann trails. Possibly camp at Washington Creek on Friday night, boat out to Grace Island on Saturday and on back to Grand Portage on Sunday the 30th.

It's quite a bit lighter weight trip than I'd hoped, but beats sitting home. It's looking like we'll hit some great fall colors; hopefully we won't end up fighting the crowds that can bring.

We are bringing our own boat, so I doubt we'll find out unless we happen to cross paths at some point. The guy says he's been on Superior and some other larger lakes several times before and doesn't think it will be a problem as long and the weather is nice, and so far the forecast is looking AWESOME. I haven't seen the boat, but I'm assuming it's along the lines of an 18-20' Lund fishing boat; nothing fancy. We are calculating it'll only be an hour enroute from Grand Portage, and we've got a marine radio and gps - what could go wrong? :P
