Justyn (GA) 22 & Nate (AZ) 15. Their first ever backpacking trip!

July 22: On Island to Daisy Farm 7.1 mi
July 23: Daisy Farm to McCargoe Cove 8 mi
July 24: McCargoe Cove to Todd Harbor 6.6 mi
July 25: Todd Harbor to Lake Richie 12.9
July 26: Lake Richie to Chippewa Harbor 4.3 mi
July 27: Chippewa Harbor to Moskey Basin 6.2 mi
July 28: Moskey Basin to Lane Cove 11.1 mi
July 29: Lane Cove to Rock Harbor 6.9 mi
July 30: Take ferry back to mainland. I would like to rent a canoe and visit Lookout Louise in the morning before we go back.

Total mileage: 63.1

I'd planned May14 boat, at the time not the "first" boat out....
But the very long travel(for me), arrangements and expense, made the uncertainty of ice-cancellation or snow-limitation too much a threat fot that time, so I personally cancelled some time back. Regrets, but such is planning.
It does seem, however, that harbor and ground conditions are going to be good for you, after all. McCargoe Cove and its Pine Mountain campsite will be serene. The west side of the Cove entrance on Superior should have sizable sentinel blocks of blue ice to greet you.

We're entertaining the idea of some off-trail, backcountry camping for at least one evening. We're experienced backpackers (group of 3) and this is our second visit to the island, so we're familiar with the difficulties of off-trail hiking on Isle Royale. I've also studied the maps, including the official Backcountry Camping Zone map / regulations, but does anyone have any suggestions or insight to possible locations that might be better than others along our route? My brother-in-law and frequent hiking partner, and his two daughters/my nieces. Cami is 15 and this is her third trip to the Isle; Kiera is 13 and this is her first trip. We elected for a middle-rib of the Isle trip to keep the options open and allow plenty of time to explore without packs.

Itinerary: We are planning a Feldtmann loop clockwise. Tentatively planning on 2 nights at Siskowit, 1 at Feltmann, and 1 at Washington Creek. That would mean a fairly aggressive first day (Windigo to Siskowit, probably stopping for supper enroute).
Notes/Other: This will be our 6th (my 7th) IR trip, and we can't seem to break out of the West side; we almost planned to be dropped at McCargoe, but the idea of being on the VII for those hours wasn't appealing.
