Rock of Ages lighthouse restoration 2018

Post by fonixmunkee »

The Rock of Ages Lighthouse Preservation Society (RoALPS) has started their work year on the restoring the lighthouse. The first work crew headed out to Isle Royale on 29 June 2018. For the next seven weeks, teams will go and perform restoration work.

I will be on the second team, working from 7-14 July 2018. Besides a lot of plastering, one of my tasks is to try and get a web cam going at the light. Since you can't have a "web cam" without the WEB, I'm hoping to have some sort of internet connection established out there. If I get something going for a camera, I'll post it here.

If I get internet, I'll also be posting some pictures to Instagram. You can follow along with the hashtags #isleroyale and #roalps:

Also, if you happen to be floating or flying by the lighthouse during the summer and see the American flag flying from the top, that means the volunteer crew is hard at work inside.

Thanks to you and the Mrs.and all the volunteers for your work on ROALH. When we were working on the Dassler cabin, we went to Passage Island. Tried to get some work going there.

We've got internet! As of 1151 CST, on 8 Jul 18, we're stuck on Barnum Island, so the camera's sitting in the cabin looking northeast. While the camera is powered up, we're posting to here:

Thanks guys for posting some of the snapshots. As you can see the camera is currently working as long as we have solar power. I'm still trying to find out a permanent way to affix it in the lens room.

if someone has any suggestions as where to point it I'm open for it but currently we have appointed this direction so that way our boat driver knows what the lake looks like so he can come out and get us if he needs.

otherwise it's an absolutely gorgeous day here with clear calm lake conditions. We're chipping away--literally--at the third floor kitchen as we speak.

Given the Island can be seen in the shot, I think this orientation or one facing IR would be good. I am guessng any other driection would just show water.

Obviously, choose the direction that best serves the project but we could hook you up with a wireless mount for your hard hat :D or maybe put it on a tracking gimble linked to a GPS app on your phone so it tracks your every movement.

We were forced to depart the island rather quickly today due to rapidly deteriorating weather. So unfortunately I wasn't able to find tune the internet or the webcam. Hopefully next week's work crew will be able to make some adjustments.

The camera is stuck again. The internet connection at the light is difficult, as is keeping the device powered (there's only solar power at the light). I'm going to see if I can get this week's work crew to get it up and running again.
