Hometown: West Lakeland Twp, MN
Arrival Date: Saturday, May 8th
Departure Date: Thursday, May 13th
Coming From/Via: Grand Portage via the Voyageur II
Itinerary:
8 May: Sail to Rock Harbor and hike over to Lane Cove
9 May: Lane Cove to Moskey Basin
10 May: Moskey Basin to Hatchet Lake
11 May: Hatchet to Desor South
12 May: Desor South to Malone Bay
13 May: Pickup at Malone and back home!

Notes/Other: This will be my first "first boat" experience, or a ride on the "Polar Express" as I believe Capt "Shiver me Timbers" Don refers to it. I planned for a mid-late May trip numerous years ago in hopes of catching the Isle before leaf out, but it was an early spring and so didn't get to enjoy the same views. I figure my chances are pretty good this time.. It will be two of us, and I'm planning for any and all weather. At least being a native Minnesotan, every day seems warm to us in May. While I'll miss seeing the orchids flowering and the other wildflowers in bloom (many of my trips have been mid-June), I look forward to seeing the naked Isle..

Arrival Date: Friday June 24th
Departure Date: Wednesday June 29th
Coming From/Via: Ranger III Ferry from Houghton, MI
Hiking Agenda: Plan A
Friday: 2.7 miles Rock Harbor to Three Mile
Saturday: 12.5 miles Three Mile to Chickenbone Lake West
Sunday: 7.9 miles Chickenbone Lake West to Daisy Farm
Monday: 6.9 miles Daisy Farm to Lane Cove
Tuesday: 6.9 miles Lane Cove to Rock Harbor
Wednesday: Take Ferry back to Houghton, MI...booooooo
Hiking Agenda: Plan B: We all feel like hiking further.
Friday: 7.1 miles Rock Harbor to Daisy Farm
Saturday: 15.4 miles Daisy Farm to Hatchet Lake
Sunday: 12.6 miles Hatchet Lake to Chickenbone East going along the north route past Minong Mine
Monday: 10.9 miles Chickenbone East to Lane Cove
Tuesday: 6.9 miles Lane Cove to Rock Harbor
Wednesday: Take Ferry back to Houghton, MI...booooooo

Questions for non-newbs ( I am a newb to hiking right now).
Do you think plan b is too aggressive for 4 young athletic men to cover in the time allotted? We will be training weekly, but I worry that my training at the Big Rock Forest Preserve in IL can't mimic the terrain seen in Isle Royale.

Welcome to the Forums "neighbor", I live next to Big Rock FP. The hill will get you good aerobic training. Johnson's Mound is also a good site for training hikes. Your trip looks doable, though I would skip staying at East Chickenbone as it is not much of a campsite. Once you get on the Greenstone and the Minong, there are lots of little ups and downs, not too bad.

Tom, when my buddy and I were planning this trip I was hoping that we would get a chance to meet some of the people I see here on the forums on a regular basis. I was surprised to see that you were going to be on the island the same time we were but, upon closer inspection it looks like you will be leaving the island two days before we arrive. After having looked closer at the list of planned 2010 trips I don't see anyone who will be on the island at the same time we are. Oh well, maybe we'll meet some of you during our next trip.

There still may be some posts! It might still happen! I know I met MDenys two years ago from this very concept, and "Alaska" from the old forum via the same thing.. It's funny how it all might work out!

I'm a new member of this forum. However, I'm quite familiar with it as it assisted my planning for a trip last August when I had an unplanned, extended stay. I took the wet conditions as a challenge so I'm going back!

Hello, my fiance and myself are arriving on June 27th and departing from the island on July 2nd. We are starting in Rock Harbor.
My fiance has been to the island before but I haven't. We're having trouble deciding what trails to take.
We definitely don't want walking to be the only thing we do. Having time to relax and to take in the scenery would be great.
Any suggestions? : )

Well fellow Ohio resident, go to Lane Cove. It's nice and quiet there. I day hiked from there to Lookout Louise. I stayed at (I think) site number 5 two nights in a row. All the way to the east. Out of the wind and near the water. Welcome to the forums!

In 2008 three friends and I went to IR for 15 days and hiked 110+ miles. It was an exhausting trip but I wanted to see the rest of the island. On May 14 we're catching the first boat out of Copper Harbor for another 15 day trip. We all want to push ourselves harder this time and shatter our old record.

Name: Andrew Rames
Email: aframes@mtu.edu
Hometown: Hemlock, MI
Arrival Date: 5/14
Departure Date: 5/28
Coming From/Via: Copper Harbor
Itinerary:

Day-----Starting From------Arriving At---------Mileage (mi)
1.........Rock Harbor...........Lane Cove.............6.9
2.........Lane Cove.............Chippewa Harbor....17.6
3.........Chippewa Harbor.....McCargo Cove.......10.9
4.........McCargo Cove........Todd Harbor..........6.7
5.........Todd Harbor...........North Desor..........11.2
6.........North Desor...........Huginnin Cove........14.4
7.........Huginnin Cove........Rainbow Cove........13.6
8.........Rainbow Cove........Siskiwit Bay...........11.1
9.........Siskiwit Bay...........Island Mine............4.3
10.........Island Mine...........South Desor...........5.5
11.........South Desor.........Malone Bay............10.8
12.........Malone Bay..........Todd Harbor...........15.9
13.........Todd Harbor.........Lake Richie............13.4
14.........Lake Richie..........Rock Harbor............14.2
15.........Rock Harbor.........Stoll Loop...............4.4

Total Mileage - 160.9 miles

Notes/Other:
Speaking from my own experience, I think this is a pretty ambitious itinerary, but I also think we can do it. I really like seeing as many different campsites as possible, but I also really like Todd Harbor. We might substitute Todd Harbor for Hatchet Lake. Our target mileage is 150 miles so we have some room for changes.
