Here are a couple of recent discoveries of old shelter pictures.

Mike where do you come by all your old maps and pictures? Neat stuff.

I'm not Mike, but both of these pictures can be found in the book, "The Wolves of Isle Royale" by David Mech (published in 1966). They're on page 28.

Treeplanter is right. I put those up quick and forgot to put where they were from. I actually got them from the NPS archives where David's book was published as "Fauna Series #7" in 1966. I am not sure when the pictures are from date-wise because the study is from 1958-1960 and the book was not published until 1966.
What I find interesting is the "new" shelters which match the style of the current ones and the backcountry shelter at Desor. One of the brochures I found states that there are shelters and fire rings at each campground and I never saw one until I found this picture.

To answer Rafiki: from anywhere and everywhere. I've been picking up stuff here and there for years and doing lots of searching. Library of Congress archives are great, just time consuming. U of M Library has an extensive collection in the Houghton archives. I hope to get access to some of the NPS collection someday, but that is in Houghton, Chicago and Nebraska. Road trip! I am also corresponding with a couple people with items and documents.

If anyone has anything they wish to share, email me privately. I have just started gathering all of this together in a rough form.

Have you browsed or searched the NPS structure database? It has pictures and historical descriptions of 134 IR structures. Interestingly it does not include any of the campground structures (shelters or outhouses).

I was extremely lucky at one time when I got to spend the night, sleeping in a feather bed in this cabin:
