I finished Wolf Island. The book recounts the early days of the Wolf-Moose study on IR through the eyes of L. David Mech, the first researcher to do the study. It is also somewhat of a historical narrative about life on IR in the early days of the Park. Mech gets his start from his undergraduate days at Cornell assisting with a black bear study in NY. He is introduced to Durwood Allen, from Purdue who is looking for a grad student to begin the study. The book offers insight into how the process for doing Winter Study begins and their approach to following the wolves and moose. It also relates his work during summer. Initially, he is based at Wright Island in Malone Bay. Eventually the Summer study is moved to its current location across from Daisy Farm. The book relates early inhabitants before the moose and wolves such as lynx and caribou. I don't want to give too much of the book away. Rolf Peterson writes the Forward and David Mech gives accolades to all the work and findings from the work by Rolf Peterson, at the end of the book. I thought the book was well done, it was actually written by Greg Breinning who did a book about paddling around Lake Superior.

Looks like a book I'd like to read on the island next summer.

My local library has this book. I'm #2 on a wait list for it. The other Mech books are worth the read!

I just finished reading the book -- savoring it over about a week. A really nice memoir, written so that it's easy to picture the wolf-moose interactions, as well as life on the island 60 years ago.

You could drill holes in the back and cover.

My plan was to wait until summer and read it on the island, but after having the book for a week, I couldn't resist any longer.

Of course, I might re-read it on the island...
