I'll be on the island Aug 4-11. Flying in to Windigo. My itinerary is on the calendar, but I messed it up (you can see, I plan on doing two different hikes on Sunday...impossible, especially for me). Looks like it'll be pretty busy, especially around the middle of the island around Hatchet Lake.

This is my revised itinerary:

Thu 4 - Fly into Windigo @ 4:00 p.m., stay at Washington Creek
Fri 5 - Washington Creek to Feldtman Lake: 9.1
Sat 6 - Feldtman Lake to Siskiwit Bay: 10.2
Sun 7 - Siskiwit Bay to Lake Desor S.: 9.9
Mon 8 - Lake Desor S. to Hatchet Lake: 8.1
Tue 9 - Hatchet Lake to Lake Desor N.: 12.3
Wed 10 - Lake Desor N. to Washington Creek: 12.6
Thu 11 - Fly out of Windigo @ 9:00 a.m.

My name is Matt, on my first solo adventure...ever. You will recognize me as the one who is in pain.

...This will be trip number 14 for one of us, 3 for the other (if only we had met and married sooner!) This is also the first time for a trip in any other month besides September/October, so we'll be off-trail most of the time for solitude:

8/6 Voyaguer II to Windigo, to Fedltman Lake (or zone 22)
8/7 xc in zone 44
8/8 xc in zone 45
8/9 xc in zone 45
8/10 xc in zone 44
8/11 xc in zone 22
8/12 Windigo to Grand Portage to Gunflint Tavern(!)

We're easy to spot: look for the rubber duck...

You have got some real "hoof'in" to do there Bull_Winkle. Daisy Farm to TH is 15 miles and TH to Washington Creek is 23 miles. And that last leg might be the hardest stretch of trail on the Island. Normally that stretch is done in 3 days, sometimes 2.

I would suggest you consider extending your schedule a bit if that is the route you are set on.

Itinerary: Current plans are:
Daisy Farm
McCargoe Cove
South Lake Desor
West Chickenbone Lake
(Rock Harbor Lodge)

Notes/Other:
Will be with my wonderful girlfriend. Timing of our trip, available vacation days, and the ferry schedule affected our plans quite a bit. Haven't been able to get out much this summer due to the insane heat/humidity, so toned down our mileage for some days.

We modified our itinerary after meeting Ranger Rob on the dock at Daisey Farm. We ended up going Daisy Farm to McCargoe Cove and spending the night at McCargoe (arrived at 1:00 pm) then we set out to Desor North. Left McCargoe at 8:00 am, made Desor North at 5:30 pm.... Filtered water, ate and slept until 10:30 pm, when my hiking mate woke up with a snake trying to wrap around his face. We left immediately and hiked the Minong at night with head lamps....made it to Windigo by 10:00 am the next morning. Hiked the entire Minong in 24 hours with the Old Guy (ME) in various states of distress (dehydration, heat stress). Memories of forced marches but the stars on the Minong at night are unbelievable.

Way to go Bullwinkle! Respect!

Eighteen miles in 9.5 hours, rest for 5 hours and then 12 more miles in the next 11 hours... AT NIGHT!

It is truly astounding what a well motivated person is capable of accomplishing. A more detailed trip report in its own thread would be appreciated by everyone.

How about firing up a 2012 planned itinerary 'Sticky'?? I figured a moderator might want to author the thread.

Thanks!
