McCargoe Cove to Windigo
My wife and I are starting to plan our annual visit to the island. I hiked from Rock Harbor to Windigo via the Minong years ago (and loved it) and we did the Feldtmann loop last year. This year we're thinking of getting dropped off at McCargoe Cove and spending our first night at West Chickenbone, then onto Hatchet Lake, then South Dresor and then onto Windigo. I've heard and read that East Chickenbone is NOT a place to stay, but what about the rest?

Hatchet Lake and So. Desor are okay places to camp. Two nights in a row while camping at Hatchet there were visitors running thru the campground during the middle of the night. They went across to the north side of the lake and howled for awhile (both nights). I heard them or another group the night I spent at Desor. Also saw woodpeckers working until sundown at my camp site there. Greenstone is a nice hike, but I also enjoyed my hike down to Malone Bay from the Greenstone. I was able to get my only telephone service at ISRO sitting on a picnic table at site 1 near Lake Superior. Watched the ferry boat from Copper Harbor going toward Rock Harbor too. The V2 can take you back to GP, Minn. from Malone Bay.

Two years ago, I took some Scouts from McCargo, Todd H., Hatchett, S. Desor. Island Mine and Windigo. Not much different than the route you are planning. You may want to consider taking the Minong to Todd H. and then back to your original route. That way, you get a taste of another trail and you get to camp at Todd Harbor, which was a great site.

I haven't done it, but I like it! Well, I have to, it's the exact same trip I'm doing this summer, except with an additional stop at Island Mine. I've mostly paddled on the island, so it's time to see more of the interior and do the western Greenstone.
