West End IR trip

Post by mikep »

Just got of the phone with my brother and I'm jacked. We finally agreed to do another trip to Isle Royale but we only have 5 days around mid August. This will be our third trip, but the first to the west side. I would like any comments on our proposed trip itinerary:

Mid August
1st day: Fly in to Windigo from Houghton no later than 6:00pm, head to Huginnin Cove campsite.
2nd day: Hike to either South lake Desor campsite.
3rd day: Hike to Siskiwit Bay campsite.
4th day: Hike to Feldtmann Lake campsite.
5th day: Back to Windigo, fly out.

Thinking of shortening the route by excluding Lake Desor, and maybe staying an extra day either at Siskiwit, or Feldtmann. Looks to be about +- 10 miles a day. Both of us are 49-50 yrs old, and been backpacking for 35 of those years, and are in decent shape. Our other trips have been in the interior with a 75lb canoe on our backs, so I'm loving the idea of just a backpack.

Any comments and suggestions would be appreciated.

If it were me, I'd opt for an extra day at Siskiwit Bay over going to South Desor.
I was at both last year. I tend to lean toward the outer shoreline sites over the inland lake sites.

But, in the end, you're on the island and that is what matters at the end of the day!

Thanks Vandy, looks like we will omit Lake Desor and spend an extra day at Siskiwit Bay, or maybe spend a day fishing on Feldtmann Lake.
