Let me see if this hint helps. We're probably about a half mile from a campground that could be southwest, northeast or northwest of our location.

Is is on the south side of Mott Island, near one of the shipwrecks?

Good guess, but no.

The coastline is facing south though.

In Rock Harbor, north shore between Daisy Farm and Three Mile, a half-mile NE of Caribou Island.
"And standing on the the crest of the Greenstone Ridge, I suddenly had this desire to retreat north to where I just come, to stay in the backcountry, to spend another day in a place where the only deadline I had was to pitch the tent before dark."

Another good guess, but no.

Another clue, the forest in the background didn't exist before 1936.

Is there a campground in each of those directions or is there one in one of those possible directions? It looks a lot like the shore line between Rock Harbor and Scolville Point.

There's a campground SW of our location, one to the NE, and one to the NW. The one to the NW is the closest (1/2 mile?).

No, not that bit of coast.

1936 help define the forest in the background.

Malone Bay to Chippewa Harbor. Part of the 36 burn area.

If I keep going, I will eventually circumnavigate the Isle. 8)

Yep, that’s it. We’re probably halfway between Malone and Chippewa Harbor. If we beached our kayaks and walked inland, we end up at the Lake Whittlesley campground (after swimming across the lake).

The people you see in the canoes were from Austria. They were lucky that we had an offshore, north wind on the day they paddled back to Rock Harbor. As you can see by the rocks, this is one coast you don’t want to paddle along in bad weather.
