May 5 Voyageur II Pushed to 12th

Post by Hobbes »

Just got off the phone with the folks in Grand Portage. They’re making calls to push the May 5 boat to the 12th. My first trip to the Isle will have to wait - I can’t make the reschedule work.

Feeling bummed! ):

Yes, it has happened again. Winter has things locked up well into April and getting to the island on the first Sat of May is not looking good. We waited as long as we could to make the call but don't want to wait until the week before and spring the news. By letting everyone know now we hope they can still adjust their schedule to make it work on the 12th. We know that not everybody has the flexibility but we would hate for people to be on the way here and find out we can't get there. Sorry for the news.

Darn! I'm really hoping there won't be any issues for Memorial Day :(

Bummer Hobbes. Where are you coming from? Maybe there are other options for a hike that week.

No worries Cap. Totally understand - weather isn’t something to mess around with!

I’m coming from southeast MI, so maybe some options in the UP.

Porcupine Mountains or Pictured Rocks could be other options for you in the UP. You'll still get the great water views. The North Country Scenic trail runs through Pictured Rocks for 42 miles all along Lake Superior.

I like the Pictured Rocks idea. A little more tame, but still good views of Superior.

If you're still thinking of MN - Boundary Waters and Superior Hiking Trail are both awesome options!

Thanks Captain Don. I was kind of assuming that might happen anyway. Reschedule works for my crew so I better get over there and reserve a spot or two.

To be honest they will both probably have their own accessibility issues. :(

Captain Don,

Thanks for the call last night. I really appreciate it and I'm glad I was able to reschedule. Thanks for your professionalism.

I kind of figured that the 5th would be cancelled, too. I'm sitting here in the UP looking across Lake Huron to Canada and the only open water is the shipping channel to the St. Mary's River. The ice is still at least 30 inches thick in places. So much for spring.

I second Pictured Rocks as consolation hike to consider. About 40 miles of the NCST travels through it, hugging the shore of Lake Superior, and there are shuttle services if you don't want to backtrack. The NPS site is pretty informative: https://www.nps.gov/piro/planyourvisit/backcountry.htm

Blue skies have returned long enough to charge the web cam batteries, clearly showing Winter is still present.

What are the chances the first Queen IV trip on May 14th gets pushed back? I don't mind what kind of craziness is going on on the island itself, I just want to be able to get to the island.
