Headed to island next week: advice?

Post by AnnTRiley »

We are headed to the island for a 3 day stay @ the Lodge on Monday, the 17th. It’s our first trip. Any advice about weather conditions currently, the trip on the ferry, the condition of the lake or anything else?

weather: could be cooler than you'd expect---pack warm clothes! Also bug dope and headnets, in case the bugs are at full throttle. Spare shoes and extra socks, so that if you get a soaker on one of your outings, you'll have something dry to wear later that day.

lodge: a stay comes with a halfday canoe rental. Paddling around well-protected Tobin Harbor is a great way to explore, and there's at least one sweet hike you can reach that way. (Search for "lookout louise" and/or "hidden lake dock.")

ferry: if you're taking the Ranger and have young children or a sensitive disposition, don't watch the Nature documentary "Moose: Life of a Twig Eater." Very, very sad things happen to moose in it. Even if the lake is calm, it will be cold out on deck---so if you want to hang out in the open air, bring your warm clothes in the day pack you board with. (They'll probably make you check the bulk of your baggage, which the lodge will transfer to your room for you.)

Look for the sneaky beaver building something under the dock where the Sandy parks!!

Definitely do the Scoville point hike it’s beautiful and look for the Bald Eagle nest once you get on the final approach to the point it’s on the left fairly close to the trial. The nest is huge and built with large branches industrial strength! Would recommend taking the Tobin Harbour loop going back for some nice variety Enjoy!

Did you see eagles either on or in(young) the nest?

Yes there was a adult on the nest also got off the nest and make a quick loop while I walked past going back. I ran onto a ranger on the way out and he told me about the nest he did see chicks in the nest think he had binoculars unfortunately I did not but the nest is quite close to the trail easy to spot.
